Great Northern-951 ~ March, 14, 2023

     March 24, 2023 was a sunny, but chilly winter day perfect for a dairy auction at the Great Northern Sales Arena!  The March Dairy Production Sale offered both Jerseys and Holsteins appealing to a variety of potential buyers.   Bidding was active throughout the sale and at day’s end the group averaged $2,308.

     A group of 17 fresh Jerseys sold from Lost-Elm Jerseys.  All but one were in their first lactation and certainly were an impressive group sired by the breed’s top sires and backed by deep maternal lines.  Interest was high as the prices reflect.   The high cow at $3,600 was a Colton Junior 2 Year Old from a VG-87 Tequila then EX-92, VG-89 and EX-94 dams.   Close behind at $3,500 was a VIP Summer Jr. 2 Year Old fresh 1 month and milking 65 lbs.  Her EX-90 dam completes 4 generations Excellent.  The other cow over $3,000 was Lot 1, a Fizz Junior 2 Year Old from an EX-95 show winning Topeka.  This promising young cow sold for $3,100.  All in all, the Jerseys averaged $2,603.  

     Also featured in the sale was a group of 12 deep pedigreed Holsteins and Jerseys from Bricco’s Cow Town.  The Bricco’s have decided to officially retire from milking so were offering their select group. The top price of $3,400 came on an exciting young Dempsey 2 Yr Old just fresh 1 month.  Her VG 23,370 Doorman dam has an EX-93 35,500 full sister and the next 3 dams are EX-92 3E, EX-92 3E and EX-90.   Selling for $3,200 was a silky black Jackson-Red daughter milking 117 lbs.  Already scored VG-88 she looked like a sure bet to follow in her EX-91 2E dam’s footsteps. 

     Among the other consignments of fresh first and second lactation cows, the top price of $2,300 came on a Saturn 2 Yr Old just fresh with 94 lbs.   Her EX-90 dam with 29,410M.  An exceptional group of bred heifers sold very well with the high seller in this group being a Catalyst daughter due to Showtime.   From the Blackrose family, she’s backed by 8 EX or VG dams and sold for $2,700.

Inwood-Hill Milking Herd & Springing Heifer Dispersal ~ February, 21, 2023

The winter storm held off until the following day allowing for a very nice crowd at the Inwood-Hill Milking Herd & Springing Heifer Dispersal at Great Northern on Tuesday, February 21, 2023.  Consisting of both Holsteins and Brown Swiss, this homebred herd from Argyle, WI had a rolling herd average of 22,198 3.9% 867 3.1% 689.  After 30+ years of breeding and developing their Inwood-Hill herd, Gary and Amy Dammen decided to retire from the milking side of the business. 

The Brown Swiss in the herd were from the foundation cow families at the David Brown and Family herd in Monroe, WI.   The high type, deep pedigreed group commanded a great deal of attention from potential buyers and the high sellers in the sale were  from the Brown Swiss line-up.  A beautiful uddered Foremost 2-year-old sold for $7,400 to Peter Vail, Engelwood, FL.  This fresh young cow had a welded-on udder with veins galore and was backed by 3 VG dams.  Also selling to Peter Vail for $6,300 was the Finnigan daughter who had recently scored EX-90 as a 3 year old.  Due late May to sexed Famous, her dam completes 3 generations at EX-92.   Selling for $3,900 was the VG-87 Braiden with 24,134 4.3 1045 3.5 840 at 4-07 and springing to sexed Dependable.   Browns Divas Divine-ET is backed by 2 EX, then 3 more VG dams.

Among the Holstein group a sweet uddered Red & White claimed high selling honors at $3,800.   This Apple-Crisp was recently fresh, milking 100 lbs. a day and backed by a GP-83 30,583 Colt-P dam.   A promising 2-year-old King Doc milking 87 lbs. and bred to Eye Candy sold for $3,000.  Her GP-83 23,430 Diamondback dam is a maternal sister to the Red Apple-Crisp that sold for $3,800.   A favorite among the springing heifers was a King Doc from a VG-87 Damion with 24,560M.  She sold for $2,900.

Great Northern-949 ~ January, 31, 2023

Frigid temperatures did not deter potential buyers from participating in the January Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern on January 31, 2023.  Online bidding and in-person bidding was consistent and steady throughout the sale. 

Commanding the top price of $3,400 was a 25,458 Golddust fresh in her second lactation and milking 115 lbs.  Just scored VG-86, she looked to be quite capable of cracking the Excellent mark!   Her EX-91 dam has records to 37,370M and lifetime totals over 195,000M.  Two other high type cows sold for $2,750 each.  Lot 1, a VG Doctor with 23,160 4.5 1036 3.2 744 @ 1-10 sodl fresh with 99 lbs. and backed by a VG-87 30,620 dam.  The other cow, a grade by Frazzled, was an AAA cow with 36,606 last lactation.   On her January test she cranked out 146 lbs. and looked every bit capable of producing more!  Two registered 2 yr olds sold for $2,600 each.  A GP-82 Unix milking 87 lbs. and bred back to Warrior-Red and a Red Analyst milking 75 lbs.   Each are backed by VG-88 dams with 36,250 4.2 1513 and 25,750 4.9 1260 3.5p respectively. 

The group of primarily fresh first and second lactation cows was well received by dairymen looking to add good looking, hardworking cows to their herds.    The sale was managed by Great Northern Land  & Cattle Co., Inc.

Great Northern Holiday Sale ~ December, 13, 2022

The 2022 edition of Holiday Sale at Great Northern featured a superb group of young cows, a stellar group of bred heifers and a nice variety of show age heifers of all ages.   The bidding was spirited with a nice crowd on hand and many taking advantage of the online bidding process.  79 lots averaged an impressive $3,063.  

Topping the sale at $15,500 was a barn favorite, Jeffrey-Way Spunky-Red-ET *PC “VG-85”.  This Ronald daughter sold fresh in November and looking for more points after making 23,411 4.9 1149 3.7 872 at 2-00.   Featured in the December 2022 Select Sires directory, Spunky completes 13 generations Excellent or Very Good. Her dam EX-92 2E, 43,940M and the granddam, Saphire *RC *PO EX-94 4E GMD with 56,170M is a foundation cow at Jeffrey-Way Holsteins, Belleville, WI consignors.   Placing the final bid was A-L-H Genetics, the Netherlands.

Generating a great deal of interest in the heifer line-up was Kamps-RX Appleb Adalynn-ET *RC.   This December, 2021 Moovin daughter was 3rd Winter Calf at the 2022 District 3 Show and her VG-87 full sister was the winning Summer Junior 2 Year Old at the recent Royal Winter Fair.   Their dam, KHW Regment Apple B-Red-ETN EX-90, is making her mark as a tremendous brood cow.   Consigned by Reggie & Krysty Kamps, Darlington, WI, Adalynn headed to Arlington, Iowa to join the herd of Jody Nus who placed the winning bid of $6,500.  

Among the phenomenal group of bred heifers, a real eye-catcher was the red Jordy daughter consigned by Daryld Gahm & Robert Gallivan, Mt. Carroll, Illinois.   This September, 2020 model is +3.12T and sold due in January to sexed Warrior-Red.   Her 25,070 4.3 1076 3.4 840 King Doc dam is a daughter of National show winner, Luck-E McGucci Afro-Red-ET EX-94 2E.   Next dam the well-known Advent Asia EX-94 3E.   Emily & Leann Goode paid $6,300 to take her home to Liberty, KY.  

Lot 1, another Ronald daughter sold for $4,900 to Caleb Hamm, New London, WI.  Jenny-Lou Ronald Aces *RC VG-87 sold fresh second calf milking 104 lbs.  This potential tenth generation Excellent Apple made 25,520 4.8 1213 3.4 874 at 1-10 and was consigned by Mystic Valley Dairy LLC and Kevin Jorgensen, Sauk City, WI.  

Cattle were dispersed to buyers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and the Netherlands.   Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.  Kevin Jorgensen and Tim Schindler teamed up in the box and kept the sale rolling along at a quick pace.  Fielding bids were Brandon Ferry, Chad Ryan, and Lynn Harbaugh.   Jordan Siemers handled the online bidding for Cowbuyer.com.   Paula and Rick Bovre clerked the sale.  Preparing the cattle for the sale were Ben Buske, David Petersheim, Kylie Nickels, Brady Engquist and Tyler Endres. 

Great Northern-947 ~ November, 15, 2022

The November Dairy Production on November 15, 2022, at Great Northern consisted of a barn full of fresh first and second lactation cows as well as a superb group of springing heifers.   Both Holsteins and Jerseys were included in the lineup. 

A red and white Rager-Red daughter caught the eye of several, resulting in a spirited bidding war! The gavel came down at $4,000 for this VG second lactation cow milking 109 lbs. and backed by 4 EX dams.  Another high type cow was the Sidekick 3 year old who was struck off at $3,800.  Milking 95 lbs. this beautiful uddered cow certainly needed to see the classifier!  Selling for $2,750 was a 2-year-old Surly daughter milking 97 lbs. and backed by a 40,900 dam.  Three other cows sold for $2,700 each.  They were a Batman 2 yr old milking 90 lbs; a red-factor, polled Landslide 2 yr old milking 85 lbs. and backed by 3 VG & 7 EX dams; an a VG Doppler 3 year old milking 100 lbs. and backed by 11 EX or VG dams.   Well over half of the cows exceeded the $2,000 price mark. 

Among the springing heifers, two heifers commanded $2,400 each:  A Cheers springing to Showtime and  backed by a 26,760 dam and a Radio due to Fuel from 10 EX & VG dams.  Another Radio daughter due to Fuel sold for $2,350.  

The high selling Jersey for the day hailed from the Veronica family.   Already scored EX-90 and backed by EX-95, EX-96 & EX-97 dams she sold for $1,800.

Barker Farms Complete Dispersal ~ October, 20, 2022

The Barker Farms Complete Dispersal was held October 20, 2022 at the farm in Monroe, Wisconsin.   Don, Bonnie and Heath Barker offered their homebred grade Holstein herd that boasted a rolling herd average of 26,677 4.1% 1053 3.2% 866 on 2x a day milking.   The herd was A.I. bred with Select Sires for many generations and were an impressive group in excellent condition.   The cows were housed in sand bedded freestalls and milked in a stall barn.  A nice crowd of determined buyers gathered and bid actively as Tim Schindler, auctioneer, and Kevin Jorgensen, pedigree commentator, moved through the 294 head very quickly and efficiently.   

The high selling cow at $3,300 was a Helix 2 yr old milking 87 lbs. and serviced to Zythos.   Her dam had two records over 36,000M.   Close behind at $3,100 was a Superior 2 yr old milking 92 lbs. and bred to Holliday.   Her dam a 32,998M producer.  Another 2 yr old commanding a final bid of $3,100 sold milking 87 lbs. and serviced to Trooper.  Her Petrone dam with 30,354M.   The herd’s two-year-old group was certainly in demand as they claimed the top 10 spots on the high sellers list! 

Among the large group of bred heifers, the top price of $2,450 came on a heifer springing to High Seas and backed by two dams over 28,000M.  A Coffee daughter due to Millington and backed by two dams over 29,000M sold for $2,350.

A Unix Select in the short bred heifer group claimed high selling honors at $1,750.   Pregnant to Edge, she is backed by a 28,508 Mogul daughter.  

Cattle were dispersed to buyers in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.  The Barkers are to be commended on breeding and developing an outstanding herd!

Fond du Lac County Classic ~ October, 13, 2022

An outstanding group of young cows, bred heifers and deep pedigreed show-age heifers was offered in the 77th edition of the Fond du Lac County Classic on October 13, 2022.   The sale was held at the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac, WI and sponsored by the Fond du Lac County Holstein Association. 

The high seller for the evening came on Lot 2 consigned by Jeff, Kate & Brooks Hendrickson, Belleville, WI.   Jeffrey-Way AP Audition-Red *PC was classified Good Plus-83 in her first lactation when she made 26,390 4.5 1194 3.1 828.   This Ammo-P daughter certainly has many more points in her and looks to complete 8 generations Excellent in the D-R-A August family!   Milking well over 100 lbs. a day, Audition was selected by John Ketter, Malone, WI for $5,000

Selling for $4,400 was the consignment of Mystic Valley Dairy LLC and Kevin Jorgensen, Sauk City, WI.  Jenny-Lou-KJ Drstc Giovanni sold milking 148 lbs. on her last test!  This Good Plus-84 @ 2y Drastic-P daughter made 36,220 3.9 1397 3.3 1186 at 1-10 and is backed by 8 Excellent and Very Good dams with records to 60,160M!   Caleb Hamm added Giovanni to his growing New London, WI herd.  

Among the show-age heifers offered, a favorite of many was the June, 2022 Doorman from the Harvue Roy Frosty EX-97 3E GMD family.   Redcarpet Frosted Flakes-ET sold to Emmie Jones, Williamsburg, Iowa for $3,800.   Consigned by Redcarpet Genetics, Kirkland, IL, this stylish young lady is backed by an EX-94 35,740 dam, then the EX-92 2E GMD Dundee daughter of Frosty.  

The high selling bred heifer was consigned by Jordan & Brianna Lemke, Chilton, WI.  Oakfield Doorman Ella-ET sold due in December with a Fitters Choice heifer calf.   This Doorman hails from the Elegance family, her dam the EX-93 show winning OCD Gold Chip Ellie-ET.  Ella was purchased by Callie Arneson, Stoughton, WI for $2,550.

A small group of Jerseys were offered in the sale as well with the top price of $2,800 coming on a consignment from Jason Luttropp, Berlin, WI.   Lost-Elm Colton Patzy VG-88 at 2y sold backed by EX-93, EX-95 & EX-95 dams!   Logan Welch placed the final bid of $2,800 to add her to his Wayland, MI herd.  

The sale averaged $2,225 on 68 lots with the 50 cows averaging $2,289.  The show-age heifers averaged $2,142, while the bred heifers averaged $1,900 and the Jerseys averaged $1,870.

Great Northern-944 ~ September, 8, 2022

With both Holsteins and Jerseys offered in the September Dairy Production sale, interest in the sale ran high!  Held on September 8, 2022, at the Great Northern Sales Arena, the sale offered 64 head of fresh young cows and a group of Registered Holstein open heifers.  Bidding was active in person as well as online via Cowbuyer.com.  The 10 Jersey cows averaged $2,295 while the 47 Holstein cows averaged $2,225.

Topping the sale at $4,000 was a Red Addision 2 yr old milking 96 lbs. on her September test and bred to sexed Architect.   Her impressive pedigree ran 12 generations deep with EX & VG dams with the first 4 dams over 40,000M.   Another 2 yr old generating a good deal of interest was the Warrior milking yearling from Weeks Dundee Anika EX-97 2E.   This promising young cow sold for $3,300.   Close behind at $3,200 was her herdmate, a sweet uddered Awesome-Red 2 yr old from the All-American, TK-Plain-View Ripley EX-96 2E.  Selling for $3,150 was a potential EX by Husky.   This second lactation cow is already VG-85 with 28,680 at 1-10.   She sold milking 108 lbs. on her first test.   The high selling grade cow at $2,600 was a No-Fla Fireball daughter with 24,426 @ 1-11 and already milking 121 lbs. just 2 weeks fresh in her second lactation. 

In the Jersey line-up the high price of $2,800 came on a Colton milking yearling just fresh 1 month.  Her EX-90 dam & EX-94 granddam, both All-Americans.   A Fizz 2 yr old milking 87 lbs. last test and backed by EX-90 and EX-94 dams sold for $2,700 while another Fizz milking yearling from 8 EX & VG dams sold for $2,650. 

In the group of open heifers, the December, 2021 Red Analyst from a VG-86 Diamondback and EX granddam was high seller at $1,250.   Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

Great Northern-943 ~ July, 25, 2022

Once again bidding was active both online and in person at the July Dairy Production Sale on July 25, 2022.  The line-up of cows at the Great Northern Sales Arena was impressive with their well attached udders and high production statistics.  Prices followed suite with 90% of the cows selling for $2,000 or higher.  

The top price of the evening came on a Red Warrior 2 yr old milking 78 lbs.   A promising junior 2 yr old, her dam is EX-94 and a Reserve All-American Red & White!   The gavel came down at $3,700 for this sale feature!   Commanding a final bid of $3,100 was a second lactation Hodedoe daughter just fresh with 102 lbs. and backed by 11 generations of Excellent or Very Good dams.   A 2 yr old milking 90 lbs. sold for $2,900.  Sired by Anakin, her dam and granddam are both 30,000 lb. producers.   Another 2 yr old, this one by King Doc, sold for $2,850.

The high selling springing heifer was a Red Advent due to Showtime.  Backed by an EX-94 31,430 dam that completes 17 generations EX or VG, this heifer sold for $3,000.

Great Northern-942 ~ June, 28, 2022

Interest in high type, high producing young cows was strong at the June Dairy Production Sale on June 28, 2022, at Great Northern. Bidding was active both in person and online via Cowbuyer.com

 The high selling cow for the evening at $4,300 was an Altitude 2 yr old just fresh from the Apple family.  A potential ninth generation Excellent, this red and white Summer Junior 2 has a bright future!   Commanding a final bid of $3,600 was an Impression 3 yr old recently classified Very Good-87.  Milking 116 lbs. this well-balanced young cow is backed by an EX, 34,000 lb. dam and sold serviced to sexed King Doc.  Just scored EX-90, the third calf Gold Chip daughter of EX-95, Res. All-American, Petitclerc Sid Sunkiss sold for $3,200.  Fresh 3 weeks she was milking 117 lbs.   The high selling grade cow at $2,950 was a beautiful uddered Capital daughter milking 115 lbs. after making 25,107 at 1-09.  

The top price on springing heifers came on a tall, long High Octane daughter from the EX-95, Junior All-American, Walk-Era Dundee Annelise.   Due in July to Diamondback, this June, 2020 heifer sold for $3,000.

Hi View Hi Time Sale ~ May, 31, 2022

May 31, 2022 was a day of opportunity for passionate dairymen of multiple breeds as the Hi View Hi Time Sale offered an exceptional line up of Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Holsteins and Guernseys! Brian and Kristi Dinderman and their family from Orangeville, Illinois offered an exceptional group of young cows and heifers from best of their Hi-View herd.  

The popularity of the Guernsey line-up was no surprise as the Dindermans are well know for their 96 point All-American, Hi Guern View Dancing Diva-ET.   The top selling Guernsey at $7,600 was Hi Guern View Dream On-ETV GP-84 @ 2y and just fresh with second calf.   This 2021 Honorable Mention Junior All-American is an American Pie from Diva’s full sister, Dancers Delite, EX-91, and an All-American nominee herself.   Dream On is a third-generation All-American nominee and looks to soon be a third generation Excellent!   Purchased by Family-Af-Ayr Farm and Ken Borgmann, she now calls Caledonia, IL home.   The second high selling Guernsey at $5,200 was Hi Guern View Lifes a Dance VG-88.  Just fresh, she’s an Axel from Diva’s EX-94 2E Levi daughter who was named Junior All-American Aged Cow in 2021. Steve & Maureen Zimdars placed the final bid to add her to their Ripon, WI herd.

A barn favorite in the Holstein line-up was Hi-View-Corners Expresso VG-87.   This Denver Sr. 3-Year-Old sold fresh in March with 108 lbs. on her May test.   Looking like she could take a big jump in classification, this 13th generation Excellent or Very Good was purchased by Magen Busker, Ridott, IL for $4,500. 

Among the high-quality Brown Swiss, a Rampage summer yearling caught the eye of many!   Her VG Comanche dam sold due in August with the second dam EX-91 with records to 24,450 4.5 1110 3.7 914.  This heifer should be fun this summer for Dylan & Cameron Ryan, Fond du Lac, WI who paid $4,500 for this fancy heifer. 

A dam and daughter duo teamed up to top the list for the Ayrshire selections.   Hi-Ayr-View Predator Madison VG-86 sold just fresh from an EX-93 Distinction daughter.  This promising 4-Year-Old sold for $3,500 to Shelby Monthy and Alexa Mueterthies, Lawler, IA.   Madison’s Junior 2-Year-Old by Reagan sold fresh one month to Matthew Mackinson, Pontiac, IL.   This exciting young cow commanded a final bid of $3,100.  

In all, 73 head sold for an average of $2,647.  Cattle sold to Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Ontario.   The Dindermans graciously offered two embryo packages with proceeds going to the Jared Dickman Fundraiser.  A total of $7,100 was raised to help this young man who recently was severely injured in an auto accident.

GREAT NORTHERN-940 ~ May, 10, 2022

Prices were strong and steady at the May Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern on May 10, 2022.  Field work had just begun in the area, but dairymen found time to either attend in person or bid online to add some high producing young cows to their herds.  Overall, the good looking group averaged just shy of $2,500. 

The top price of the evening was $3,700 for a GP-82 Humblenkind daughter milking 142 lbs. in her second lactation.  With her big, wide rear udder, she looks to make it 13 generations Excellent or Very Good in the Roxy family!   Her herdmate by Kenobi commanded a final bid of $3,600.   This tall, wide rumped 2 year old was milking 91 lbs. and sold serviced to King Doc.   Her GP-84 Red dam is backed by 11 generations Excellent in the Roxys.   A beautifully balanced Magictouch 3 year old milking 136 lbs. sold for $3,300.  Backed by two dams over 31,000M, this lovely uddered cow made 22,120 4.1 915 3.4 757 at 1-11.  Another 5 cows sold for $2,900.  The high selling bred heifer at $2,750 was an Addision due to Aflame-Red.   Her VG-85 EX-MS Impression dam has records to 40,950M 1582F.

Spring Fashions at the Northern ~ April, 23, 2022

A nice crowd was on hand as well as bidding online for the Spring Fashions at the Northern sale on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Great Northern.   The sale offered 104 lots of both Holsteins and Jerseys.  A select group of beautiful uddered young cows sold along with an extensive line-up of heifers of all ages.  At day’s end the Holsteins averaged $2,970 while the group of Jerseys averaged $1,986.   Cattle sold to buyers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania. 

Topping the sale was a Hanans summer yearling who is +3.34 PTAT.  Her dam is a VG Unix 2 yr old from the EX-92 Diamondback daughter of World Champion, Shakira EX-97-2E.   Consigned by John & Connor Erbsen, Lanark, IL, Erbacres Hanans Liliana-ET was purchased by Genosource, Blairstown, IA for $9,500. 

The second high seller at $7,200 was consigned by Steve Irwin, Beason, IL.   This silky winter calf by King Doc was a favorite of many.  Her VG-86 Unix dam is an own daughter of the Reserve All-American, Knonaudale Mudpie-ET EX-94 2E.   Tracker Dodds, Frederic, WI should have lots of fun in the show ring this summer with this fancy lady!

A standout in the red & white fall calves was BHHD Warrior Famous In-Red.   Consigned by Ballweg Hickory Hills Dairy, Dane, WI, this Warrior is a daughter of their Reserve All-American, Rosedale Prettyfancy In-Red EX-94 2E.   Ellis Frank, New Richmond, WI paid $6,600 for this sister to the All-American Spring Yearling of 2020, BHHD Claim to Fame-Red-ET VG-88. 

The daughters of Hilrose Advent Anna-Red-ET EX-95 3E GMD continue to impress and her Redlite summer yearling consigned by the Brantmeier Family of Hilrose Dairy, Sherwood, WI was cut just like her Reserve All-American full sister!   Hilrose Redlite Afro-Red-ET now calls Chisago City, MN home as Elle Penzenstadler and Zoey & Austin Buehring placed the final bid of $6,200.

The high selling Jersey was consigned by Brandon Nehls, Hustisford, WI.   BJ Colton MIA sold for $4,000 to Nolan Burken, Galesville, WI.   This Colton summer yearling is backed by a VG-88 2 yr old then two 95 point dams.   CS Viral Embrace-ET consigned by Lauren Siemers, Newton, WI commanded a final bid of $3,500 from Nolan Burken as well.   This Sr. 2 Year Old by Viral is backed by 8 generations Excellent or Very Good and was a ABA Junior All-American nominee in 2020.  

Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.   Chris Hill and Kevin Jorgensen joined forces in the sale box while Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh and Chad Ryan fielded bids.   Jordan Siemers handled the online bidding on Cowbuyer.com.   Kylie Nickels, Yvonne Preder and Jeff Brantmeier presented the cattle in the ring.  

Great Northern-938 ~ February, 15, 2022

The February Dairy Production Sale on February 15, 2022, featured the Voigtscrest Milking Herd Dispersal.  Larry & Kim Voigts, Platteville, WI sold all salable cows, and it certainly was an impressive group of young cows!  7 King Doc daughters sold, and Tri-Day Ashlyn and C Continental Scarlet-Red were foundation cows in many of the pedigrees.   A nice crowd was on hand and several active bidders on Cowbuyer.com made for quick, spirited bidding throughout the sale.  At day’s end the Voigtscrest herd averaged $2,731 with the entire sale averaging $2,410.

The top price of $5,800 came on Lot 1 from the Voigts.   Voigtscrest Doc Anders VG-86 @ 2y sold milking 102 lbs. in her second lactation and serviced to sexed Delta Lambda.  Her VG-87 Gold Chip dam is backed by 4 generations Excellent in the Ashlyn family.  This silky black, well balanced dairy cow sold to Brandon Flannery, Argyle, WI.   Her herdmate by Tatoo sold for $4,600 to Camden Spinolas, Harvard, IL.  Voigtscrest Tatoo Sydney looked to be a high scoring young cow.   Sill milking 59 lbs. in her first lactation and due in May to King Doc, she is backed by a VG-88 31,790 4.4 1407 Atwood who completes 8 generations EX or VG in the Scarlet-Red family.   Also making Harvard, IL home is Voigtscrest King Scaat VG-85.  This big, tall King Royal milking 108 lbs. in her second lactation and serviced to Delta-Lambda sold to White Oaks Cattle Co. for $4,200. 

Among the consignments, the top price of $4,400 came on a special King Doc 2 yr old consigned by Carl Werner.   Car-Bon Doc Abbysue was milking 91 lbs. and is backed by 4 EX dams in the premier cow family bred at Car-Bon.   Abbysue was the selection of Kamphius Farms LLC, Brandon, WI.   Second high seller in the consignment group was a Doorman 2 yr old milkng 103 lbs. consigned by Jared Dueppengiesser.  Backed by an EX-94 Goldwyn, Oakfield Doorman Kismet-ET sold for $2,550 to Matthew Nolt, Mifflin, PA.   The high selling grade cow at $2,300 was a sweet uddered 2 yr old milking 90 lbs. Four springing heifers were offered in the sale with a top of $1,850 for a big Diamondback due to Aflame-Red from 2 generations over 32,000M 4.3%F.

Unfortunately, January 11, 2022, proved to be one of those below zero days of winter!  The crowd and consequently prices at the January Dairy Production Sale suffered to some extent as dairymen were busy dealing with the problems presented at their farms by the miserably cold. 

However, several cows did top the $2,000 mark with a high of $2,850 on a King Doc fresh second lactation and milking 108 lbs.  Her GP-84 dam is backed by 6 generations Excellent.   Selling for $2,700 was a VG Drake-Red daughter fresh with her third calf after making 27,480M.  This 11th generation EX or VG is sure to pick up more points and was milking 116 lbs. From this same branch of the Roxy family, a GP-83 Magictouch sold for $2,600.  She was fresh in her second lactation, milking 98 lbs. and is backed by 10 generations Excellent!   The high selling grade cow at $2,000 was a Accelvino 3 year old milking 115 lbs.

The December Dairy Production Sale on December 20, 2021, featured an impressive group of fresh cows from Gold-N-Oaks Farm, Barneveld, WI, and the retirement dispersal of all salable cows and springing heifers from Indies-View, Melrose, WI.  Thus, the sale offered something for everyone!

Achieving high selling honors for the day at $2,800 was the beautiful end-stall cow sired by Kennedy.  This consignment from Gold-N-Oaks Farm made 23,940 4.5 1088 3.4 819 at 2-00 and was fresh again with 92 lbs. first test.   Close behind at $2,700 was her herd mate by Helix.  This 26,860 4.4 1181 3.4 901 producer sold milking 140 lbs.   Also selling for $2,700 was a VG-87 Hypnotic from Indies-View.   Finishing over 27,000 4.6f 3.5p and due this spring with a King Doc heifer calf, this fifth generation Excellent or Very Good looked the part to pick up more points next classification.  Another Hypnotic from Indies-View sold for $2,550.   This fresh 2 yr old looked very promising and is backed by 8 generations of Excellent and Very Good dams.   Also selling for $2,550 was a 31,620 4.0 1277 Rio from Gold-N-0aks.   She sold milking 136 lbs. first test.

The high selling springing heifer was a big Jordy due in January to Aristocrat-Red.  Backed by an EX-93 3E 26,616 dam, this tall, long, straight-lined heifer was a real eye-catcher and sold for $2,350.

Great Northern Holiday Sale ~ December, 13, 2021

A beautiful December day and an outstanding line-up of cows and heifers combined for a successful Great Northern Holiday Sale on December 13, 2021.   At day’s end the 74 lots averaged $2,675.  

Lots 1 and 2 claimed high selling honors at $7,000 and $6,800 respectively.   Lot 1, Redcarpet Doormn Daytona-ET was 1st Winter Yearling at the 2021 Midwest Fall National and sold due later in the month to sexed King Doc.   Consigned by Blackjack Holsteins, Wykoff, MN, this Doorman is backed by an EX-94 All-American by Alexander.   She was the choice of Heather Sickafoose, Albion, IN.   Lot 2 was consigned by  Jacob Viergutz, Clintonville, WI.   Ms Milksource Unix AJ-ET sold due early spring to Hanley.   This Unix hails from the Shoremar Alicia family and has two EX-97 dams in her pedigree!  Her EX-91 Doorman dam is an All-Iowa winner from the EX-97 Dundee Anika, International Holstein Show Reserve Grand Champion 2018.   AJ was purchased by Daniel Olson, Lena, WI.  

The red and white heifers offered drew considerable interest.  High seller in this group was a June 2021 Warrior from the All-American, Mead-Manor Def Adeline-Red EX-94.   Sarah Fitzgerald paid $6,500 to take Mead-Manor Warr Ads-Red-ET home to Belvidere, IL.   Ads was consigned by Megan Moede, Algoma, WI.   Daniel Olson, Lena, WI chose the June 2021 Warrior from Rosedale Lucky-Rose-Red.  He paid $5,900 for this full sister to the winning summer yearling from the 2021 International Red & White show who was consigned by Borderview Genetics & Interstate Heifer Care, Clear Spring, MD.  

The Blexys and the Apples provided the high selling black and white heifers.   A December 2020 Doorman from the EX-94 Ms Sid Blexy-ET who was just named Grand Champion at the Mideast Fall National was selected by Paul Mueller, Allenton, WI for $5,500.  Ms Sid Blexys Doormn Bea-ET was the consignment of Borderview Genetics & Interstate Heifer Care, Clear Spring, MD.   Ben Zimmerman, Wooster, OH offered a +3.85PTAT King Doc from the high type expert, Ms Apple Arriella-ET *RC EX-92.   Blackncherry KD Abella-ET *RC is a potential ninth generation Excellent and was purchased by Brandon Flannery, Shawn Nehls and Brooks Hendrickson, Blanchardville, WI for $4,800. 

Jeffrey-Way Holsteins, Belleville, WI consigned the two high selling cows in the sale.  Both of which descend from their incredible “T’ family.   Jeffrey-Way Hypnotic Teagan VG-86 sold to Jacob Kline, Myerstown, PA for $4,400.   This 2-year-old sold milking 90 lbs. and backed by 8 Excellent dams.   Adam Faust, Chilton, WI paid $3,800 for the ninth generation Excellent, Jeffrey-Way Hypnotic Tahini EX-90 EX-MS who sold milking 103 lbs.

Great Northern-934 ~ November, 16, 2021

Consistence was the theme of the November Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern on November 16, 2021.  Prices were consistent from the start of the sale to its completion.  The sale featured 68 young, good uddered Holsteins and Jerseys. 

A Jersey commanded the top price of the day at $2,600.  This Comerica 2 yr old sold milking 72 lbs. and serviced to sexed Ferdinand.   Her pedigree included 3 Excellent dams at 92, 95 and 92 points.  Close behind at $2,550 was a grade daughter of Stantons Business Plan.  This second lactation Holstein made 20,965 @ 1-09 and was fresh 1 month with 98 lbs. first test.  

Two additional grade cows sold for $2,450 each:   A Garza 2 yr old milking 90 lbs. from a welded-on udder and an Accelreign 3 yr old with 95 lbs. first test.  Coming in at $2,400 were an Eastwood fresh 2nd calf and milking 120 lbs. and a Jersey 2 yr old by VIP milking 80 lbs.  

Six springing Registered Holstein heifers sold very well.  The high seller in this group at $2,150 was a Silver daughter due to Aristocrat-Red.  Her GP-83 dam with 22,390M is backed by 6 EX or VG dams.  The six heifers averaged $1941. 

A total of 23 cows sold for $2,000 or higher with several more in the $1800 and $1900 range.   The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

Zietlow Dairy Complete Dispersal ~ October, 19, 2021

On a beautiful fall day, Rodney and Karen Zietlow dispersed their homebred herd at the Berlin, Wisconsin farm on October 19, 2021.  The herd boasted a 25,400 4.1 1031 3.2  815 rolling herd average with a yearly SCC average of 40.   Well managed in a commercial environment, this herd offered something for everyone from an impressive group of newborn calves to mature cows.  

A sale feature claimed the top price of the day at $4,450.   Bur-Rodz Doc Rhoda is a potential 19th generation Excellent by King Doc.  Due in March to sexed Delta-Lambda she is backed by an EX-91 31,728M Atwood.   Matt Engel, Hampshire, IL placed the final bid to add her to the Luck-E herd.  Also joining the Luck-E herd is a springing Luck-E Artisan-Red-ET daughter.   Due to Rager-Red, this January, 2020 model hails from the Apple family and sold for $3,000.   Her VG-88 Awesome dam sold for $2,800 to Ron Kelm, Markesan, WI.   MV-Genetica Awe Analle-Red VG-88 is due to Reeve-Red.  Her VG-88 EX-MS 32,570 Kanu P-Red dam is backed by a VG-88 EX-MS Uno from “Apple”. 

The second high price of the day at $3,700 came on Bur-Rodz Awesome R Ava-Red VG-85.  This sweet uddered Awesome 3-year-old bred to Swingman-Red sold to Dana Johnson, Pelican Rapids, MN.  Her EX-90 EX-MS 29,730 Goldsun dam is a 7th generation Excellent maternal sister to Apple.

Cattle sold to buyers from Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota with a great deal of online bidding via Cowbuyer.com.  Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale with Tim Schindler selling the sale.  The sale staff included Rick Bovre, Kevin Jorgensen, Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh, Ron Roskopf, Chad Ryan and Jordan Siemers.

Fond du Lac County Classic ~ October, 11, 2021

The 76th edition of the Fond du Lac County Classic attracted good interest from potential buyers with the superb line up of fresh young cows and deep pedigreed show age heifers offered.   Sponsored by the Fond du Lac County Holstein Breeders Association, the sale was held at the Great Northern Sales Arena on Monday, October 11, 2021.   At evening’s end, 57 lots had passed through the sale ring for an average of $2,328.

The evening’s high price of $5,800 came on the March, 2021 Moovin calf consigned by James Hackmann, Manitowoc, WI.   Jimtown Moovin Natasha-ET PTAT +4.18 has 2 maternal brothers in A.I. and her VG-88 King Doc dam is the breed’s #1 PTAT cow at +4.25.  A total of 11 EX and VG dams fill the pedigree of this promising young lady purchased by Martin Costello, Long Grove, IA.  

Another March, 2021 model claimed the second high price of $5,400.  Ms Lucias Doorman Lucky-ET is a Doorman maternal sister to the 2019 Royal Winter Fair Supreme Champion, Idee Windbrook Lynzi-ET EX-95-2E-CAN.   With 11 EX and VG dams, this fancy Doorman sold to Opportunity Acres, Lena, WI.   She was consigned by Breanna Wiley, Thorntown, IN. 

The high selling cows in the sale were both consigned by Trent & Kelsey Hendrickson, Blanchardville, WI and each sold for $3,950.   Trent-Way Triumph, a Doorman 3-year-old just classified VG-88 completes 12 generations EX and VG in the tremendous “T” family at Jeffrey Way.  Milking 105 lbs., she was purchased by Todd Lohr, Hooversville, PA.  The other Trent-Way consignment was a VG-85 Tatoo with loads of potential!   Her dam is a VG-88 31,540 Kingboy sister to “Apple”, thus the next 6 dams are all EX.   She was the choice of John Krueger, Hilbert, WI.  

Lot 1, Wargo-Acres Exactly Awsome EX-91 EX-MS, was admired by many.  This 37,360M Exactly daughter has more points coming and sold milking 127 lbs. last test.  Her EX Kingboy dam has 3 records over 30,000M and completes 8 generations EX or VG.   The consignment of Wargo Acres, Lodi, WI, Awsome sold to Daniel Olson, Lena, WI for $3,550. 

Selling for $3,500 was the consignment of Select Sires Inc., Plain City, OH.   S-S-I Riveting Alex 10393-ET is an early Riveting daughter who is +2823 GTPI and +1323M +68F +50P +904NM.   This beautiful uddered young cow sold milking over 100 lbs. to Powerhaus Genetics, Fennimore, WI.

The September Dairy Production Sale was held at Great Northern on September 21, 2021. A good uddered group of first and second lactation cows sold along with a handful of springing heifers.

The top price of the day at $2,350 came on two different cows:  a VG-85 29,650M Doorman milking 123 lbs., serviced to Logistics and backed by a VG 37,790 Atwood dam and a VG-86 Ammo-P with 28,20 4.3 1217 @ 2-01.  This 12th generation EX or VG sold fresh 45 days and milking over 90 lbs.  Selling for $2,250 were two other fresh cows:  an Undenied 2 yr old milking over 90 lbs. and a GP Link-Up daughter with 148 lbs. last test.   The Registered springing heifers sold in the $1300 - $1500 range.   Commanding the $1500 price were an Artist due to King Doc from a GP-84 38,150 4.6 1750 dam and an Addison due to Doorman from a GP-83 31,150 4.2 1301 dam.

The group of young, good uddered cows offered in the August 16, 2021 Great Northern Dairy Production Sale generated good interest from prospective buyers.  As always, first and second lactation cows producing at high levels with high components and low SCC are what buyers are looking for. 

The high price of the evening at $2,800 came on a good-looking Bubba daughter.  At 1-09 she made 24,410 4.4 1066 3.2 774.  Fresh 1 month, she was milkng well over 100 lbs. and has 10 EX or VG dams all over 30,000M.  Close behind at $2,700 was a Rio milking over 115 lbs. just fresh 3 weeks with her second calf.  At 2-01 she made an impressive 35,480 3.8 1360 2.9 1027.  Also selling for $2,700 was a Pharo milking 110 lbs. after making 27,570 4.3 1179 3.2 885 at 1-10. 

The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.  16 cows sold from $2,000 to $2,800 with another 16 selling in the $1,675 to $1,950 range.

Attitudes were upbeat and there was good interest in the superb group of first and second lactation fresh cows offered in the July Dairy Production Sale on July 19, 2021, at Great Northern.  Highlighting the group were several deep pedigreed young cows that looked the part, were milking very well and offered a promising future.

Generating a good deal of interest was the red Diamondback Jr. 3-Year-Old just fresh with her second calf and milking over 100 lbs.   Her VG dam is a daughter of 2-time Reserve All-American Red & White, Greenlea Advent Leta-Red EX-94 2E.  This big framed potential fifth generation EX or VG sold for $3,600.

The popularity of King Doc daughters was evident as a two-year-old sold for $3,100.   This promising young cow hails from the Apple family.  Her VG Diamondback dam with 26,424 4.3 1140 followed by a VG-88 31,471 Kingboy, then Apple 4E-96 DOM. 

The Roxy family consistently breeds true and dairymen never loose interest in this cow family!  A VG Splendid-P fresh and milking 113 lbs. in her second lactation sold for $2,900.   She is a potential 11th generation and certainly needs to see the classifier!  From this same branch of the cow family, a Tatoo sister to the popular “Ronald” 250HO14465 at Select Sires sold for $2,900 as well.   The future is bright for this 2 yr old backed by 11 Excellent dams!

The June Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern was held June 21, 2021.  Interest in the good uddered group of fresh cows was strong and resulted in an average of $1788 with 10 cows at $2,000 or higher. The top price of $3,100 came on a GP-83 Bandares milking 127 lbs. after making 24,380 4.2 1012 @ 1-11.  Selling for $2,950 was a Russ PP-Red 2 yr old milking 76 lbs. and serviced to Helix.  Her VG-86 25,420 dam is a daughter of the well-known Luck-E Advent Asia EX-94 3E with 40,150 4.9 1984.  Commanding a final bid of $2,900 was a 25,650 4.4 1135 @ 1-11 Legendary milking 121 lbs.  Several springing heifers sold with the top price coming on a Jersey by Chrome.  Backed by 5 EX dams and due to Whistler, she sold for $1,575.   The top Holstein springer sold for $1,250.   The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.  

40th Anniversary Sale ~ May, 29, 2021

1981 – 2021 … 40 years of business at Great Northern!  The 40th Anniversary Sale was held May 29, 2021 to commemorate this milestone! In addition to the lovely uddered young cows and show age heifers, the sale featured 6 IVF sessions.  At day’s end the 79 lots averaged $3,547.

High selling lot at $23,500 was the IVF session offered by Dean & Wanda Good, Oconto, WI.  Genosource, Blairstown, IA purchased the rights to the next IVF session on Dewgood 808 Crazzle-ET, a +2993 GTPI Altazazzle who is +889NM and +942CM$ and hails from the remarkable Rudy Missy cow family.  

Second high price of the day came on the IVF session consigned by Larson Acres Inc., Evansville, WI.  The donor is Lars-Acres Max Atlanta-ET GTPI +2893, an A2/A2 Maximus with an outcross pedigree and ranked #11 DWP$ heifer in the breed at +1177.  Melarry Farms, Rice, MN paid $16,000 for rights to the next IVF session on this member of the Rudy Missy family.

The high selling live animal was an own daughter of KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET EX-96 4E DOM.   This Redburst summer junior 2-year-old prospect is a full sister to 3-time All-American R&W, Miss Apple Snapple-Red-ET EX-96 2E.  Apple-Pts Cirio Arya-Red-ET sold springing to Latenite-P and was consigned by Paolo Grendene, Lanark, IL.  Regancrest Farms paid $10,500 to add Arya to their Waukon, IA breeding establishment. 

Among the show-age heifers, a big, white Denver fall calf caught the eye of many!  Hilrose Dairy LLC, Sherwood, WI consigned Hilrose Denver Piper who is backed by a VG-87 2y dam then 4 EX dams of which 3 have been contenders at National shows.   Arnie, Ashley & Andy Gruenes, Richmond, MN paid $9,200 to add this impressive heifer to their show string. 

Claiming high selling honors in the line up of young cows was the consignment of Select Sires Inc.   Ms Ri-Val-Re Achvr Paula-ET VG-85 GTPI +2795 has 15 sons in A.I. and 12 daughters over +2850G.  Recently fresh she sold to Siemers Holsteins, Newton, WI for $5,500.

The May Production Sale at Great Northern was held May 18, 2021.  An impressive uddered group of fresh cows awaited potential buyers.  Topping the sale at $3,000 was a VG-86 Splendid-P who made 26,640 4.9 1314 3.4 902 at 2y.  She sold serviced to sexed Reeve-Red and completes 12 generations EX or VG in the Roxy family.  Second high seller at $2,800 was a Jedi fresh with 111 lbs. after making 24,410 4.3 1039 at 2y.  Her VG-88 dam 28,756 then 7 more Excellent dams.  A VG-86 Kingboy milking 104 lbs. in her second lactation and a fourth generation VG, sold for $2,300.

Bricco's Talk of the Town II ~ April, 24, 2021

A nice crowd gathered at Pete & Brenda Bricco’s Marion, WI farm on April 24, 2021 for the second edition of Bricco’s Talk of the Town.  The Briccos offered their milking herd, springing heifers and all show-age heifers from their deep pedigreed herd with multiple generations of Excellents.   The current rolling herd average was at 25,581 4.0% 1011 3.0% 776 and the April test showed an 85 lb. average with an SCC of 100.

A favorite of the sale crew was Briccows WR Allstar-Red-ET, a fall calf by Mr Blondin Warrior-Red-ET backed by the EX-94 42,180 4.7 1986 Effectp-Red daughter from the Apple family.  As one might suspect, this beautifully balanced calf topped the sale at $8,600 going to Aaron Spinolas, Harvard, IL.      Her dam, Ms Roll-N-Vew Althea-Red-ET *PC, was second high seller at $7,250.   This All-American R&W nominee was recently raised to EX-94.  Her dam is the VG-87 Shottle from KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET.  Althea sold to the partnership of Redcarpet Holsteins, Smithcrest Holsteins and Tim Ziemba, Watertown, WI.

Lot 1, Briccows Drman Firecracker *RC EX-93, impressed all who saw her, and many comments were heard that more points lie in her future!  Hailing from the Friendly family that has provided a multitude of Excellents as well as several show winners for the Briccos, Firecracker had made over 32,000 in her first and second lactations, was a fourth generation and sold on service to Analyst-Red.  Shawn, Seth, and BJ Nehls placed the final bid of $6,750 to add her to the Nehls-Valley herd at Hustisford, WI.     

Another herd favorite, Briccows Drmn Adversity-ET EX-90 EX-MS, sold dry, due in June to Dempsey.  This fourth generation Excellent was the choice of Brandon Smith, Pulaski, WI who placed the final bid of $5,700.  Selling for $5,100 was Briccows Chelios Fruitpunch EX-90 EX-MS.  This Chelios with more points coming her way and a 9th generation Excellent or Very Good sold to Glenn Berens, Shelbyville, MI. 

The 67 head parading through the sale ring at the Talk of the Town II averaged $2,862.  The Briccos had everything in tip-top shape and are to be commended on breeding an exceptional herd.   Tim Schindler sold the sale with Kevin Jorgensen providing pedigree updates.  Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Jim Hoskens, Lynn Harbaugh, Chad Ryan, and Jordan Siemers representing Cowbuyer.com completed the sale staff. Quest for the Franchise Kind at Maple-Leigh Futures ~ April, 17, 2021

The Quest for the Franchise Kind at Maple-Leigh Futures attracted a large crowd who showed their appreciation for the high type offering with 107 live lots and choices averaging $8,959.   Held at the beautiful Maple-Leigh facilities in Delavan, WI on April 17, 2021, the sale offered some of the best in black & white Holsteins, red & white Holsteins, Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Guernseys and Jerseys!  The sale was hosted by Bella-View Holsteins, Ryan-Vu Holsteins, Franchise and Maple-Leigh Futures.

The sale goes in the record books with the new high-selling Ayrshire, Old-Bankston-AL Wynonna-ET. At $67,000 she broke the previous public sale record for the Ayrshire breed. Coming off her Intermediate Champion win at the Spring Dairy Expo, Wynonna was the Unanimous All-American Fall Yearling in 2020 as well.  Consigned by Kurt, Ted & Scott Wolf and Adam Ludwig, Epworth, IA, Wynonna now calls Misty Meadow Dairy, Tillamook, OR home.

Second high seller was Claquato Apple Brandy-Red at $56,000.  Recently raised to EX-93, Brandy was the All-American R&W Junior 3-Year-Old in 2020 and completes 7 generations Excellent.  The consignment of Maple-Leigh, Abe Light and Daniel Van de Pol, Delavan, WI, Brandy was purchased by Glamourview, Walkersville, MD. 

The high selling Jersey at $37,000 was the Supreme Junior Champion from Spring Dairy Expo, Ehrhardt Nuance Swirl.  ABA & AJCA All-American Fall Calf in 2020, Swirl sold due in June to Gentry and is backed by 8 Excellent and Very Good dams from the Snow family.  Bos Dairy, Lovington, NM purchased her from the Swirl Syndicate, Ashville, OH. 

The only Guernsey offered was Knapps Apie Tostada-ETV consigned by Acclaimed Cattle Co., Kirkland, IL.  This fancy winter calf started the sale off with a bang when she was struck off to Glamourview at $10,200.   A full sister to Tostada was Junior Champion at NGS-Madison in 2019 and their dam is the perennial winner, Tambourine EX-95. The high selling Brown Swiss was also consigned by Acclaimed Cattle Co.  Random Luck ACC Purity-ETV is a Carter winter calf from 3-time All-American nominee, Peekaboo 2E-E92.  She was purchased by Peter Vail, Englewood, FL for $7,800. 

Bidding was active throughout the day from those in attendance, those on the phones and those utilizing the online bidding via Cowbuyer.com. Cattle sold to 18 states and Canada. 

The dynamic duo of Chris Hill and Norman Nabholz joined forces in the sale box with Kevin Jorgensen, Phil Topp and Chris McCullough taking bids from the crowd.  Aaron Ray Tompkins kept the online bids in order while Chad Ryan, Lynn Harbaugh, Dusty Schirm, Tanner Schmaling, Rick Bovre, Chad Bohn, Michael Heath, Abe Light, Matt Hawbaker, Tom Cull, Mike Duckett, Louie Cozzitorto, Graisson Schmidt and Mark Brindeiro handled numerous bids for clientele unable to attend.   The cattle were expertly presented by Sarah Butler, Krysty Kamps, Jenna Langer, Kylie Nickels, Logan & Madison Harbaugh and Dylan & Cameron Ryan.  The fitting crew of Garrett Schmidt, Tyler Endres, Jordan Stookey, Grant Fremstad, Brady Engquist, Matt Boop and Tim Natzke had the cattle show ring ready along with sale day assistance from Jacob Harbaugh, Kurt Loehr and Mac McCullough.  Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. assisted with management and clerking of the sale.

The evening prior to the sale, the Mill Wheel Show Clinic led by Katie Coyne provided many showmanship tips for the juniors in attendance.  A large crowd was on hand to view the cattle and partake in the hospitality featuring Schmocker’s Famous Bacon compliments of Agromatic.  Sale morning, attendees were treated to coffee, donuts, and a Bloody Mary & Mimosa Bar compliments of ST Genetics.

Law-Kota Holstein Dispersal and April Production Sale

The Law-Kota Holstein Dispersal was held April 12, 2021, at the Great Northern Sales Arena. The April Dairy Production Sale was also featured with this dispersal and included several consignments of fresh first and second lactation cows. 

Law-Kota Holsteins from Groton, South Dakota featured deep maternal lines bred for longevity and total performance.  The high seller for the day was an EX-90 Atwood from Law-Kota, Rummage Atwd Samantha-ET.  This aged cow fresh in March is backed by an EX-984 Linjet and has three sisters at Excellent-94.   She was the choice of Randy Rummage, Columbia, TN for $2,800.   A beautiful uddered 3-year-old, Law-Kota Raimund Piper, sold to John Krueger, Hilbert, WI for $2,700.  Recently scored Excellent-90 EX-MS, this young Ridgedale Raimund-ET daughter completed 5 generations EX or VG. Another standout young cow was Law-Kota Catalst Captain-Tw VG-85 VG-MS.   She sold to Michael Steffes, Fond du Lac, WI for $2,450.    

The 21 young cows featured in the April Production Sale averaged $2,048 with a top price of $2,350 coming on a 27,820 Jedi fresh in her second lactation milking 123 lbs.   She is backed by 7 generations EX or VG.   Additionally, a Jersey by Colton, fresh in her second lactation and looking like a potential Excellent sold for $2,300.

Spring Fashions at the Northern ~ March, 23, 2021

The Spring Fashions at the Northern kicked off a busy spring sale season at the Great Northern Sales Arena on March 23rd.  The 2021 edition of this sale featured an impressive line-up of both Holsteins and Jerseys of all ages.  At day’s end the 116 lots averaged $2,450.

The group of Red & White heifers commanded a great deal of attention and provided the sale’s high sellers.   Selling for $6,700 and claiming high selling honors was the consignment of Yvonne Preder and Rodney Bohnhoff, Plymouth, WI.  Scenic-Edge Junebug-Red is a Warrior summer yearling for 2021 backed by 3 Excellent dams from the same cow family that produced Scenic-Edge Jordan-Red, the All-Canadian R&W Summer Yearling in 2019.  Junebug’s granddam is a two-time Unanimous All-American R&W and was named Junior Champion of the International R&W Show in 2009.  Grady & Lane Wendorf, Ixonia, WI placed the final bid to add this stunning heifer to their 2021 show string.   Synergy Family Dairy, Pulaski, WI consigned a promising full sister to their Reserve All-American R&W Fall Calf from 2018.   Eric Lang, Brooklyn, Iowa paid $5,800 to claim this milking yearling prospect, Synergy Smashing-Red-ET.  Sired by Jordy-Red and carrying a Redlight-Red heifer calf, Smashing-Red is backed by an EX-90 2E Reserve Jr. All-American R&W daughter of Always-Red.  

The Jersey line-up featured a deep pedigreed group from Ratliff Jerseys, Garnett, Kansas.  A favorite in this group was the Casino fall calf, Ratliff Casino Abagail, backed by 5 Excellent dams including two 95 point tanbark favorites, Ratliff Price Alicia and Rozeview Dorie D Rachel.  When the gavel fell at $5,500, Ruby Airoso, Tulare, CA was the proud owner of this super stylish calf. 

A big Tatoo springing heifer claimed the next spot on the price list at $5,300.  Consigned by Madison, McKenzie & Payton Calvert, Cuba City, WI, Moorclose Tatoo Stryker, is a junior 2 year old candidate for 2021 and sold carrying a Thunder Storm heifer calf.  Her Avalanche dam was the winning Sr. 3 Year Old and Grand Champion of the 2020 District 3 Junior Show.  Ryan Smith placed the final bid to add her to their Quad-R Holstein herd at Monticello, WI.

The high selling cow for the day was Our-Favorite Wicked-ET VG-87, consigned by Steven Summers, Milwaukee, WI.   This Avalanche 2 year old is +3.54 GPTAT and sold serviced to sexed Hanford.  Her dam is the EX-94 Doorman daughter of Our-Favorite Unlimited, EX-94 2E.  Nova Holsteins, New Richmond, WI paid $4,800 for this lovely uddered young cow.

Lot 1 claimed top spot on the March Dairy Production Sale price list on March 9, 2021.  This grade Phantom daughter made 28,360 4.2 1184 @ 2y and sold fresh in her second lactation and milking 105 lbs.  She was struck off at $2,650.  Commanding a bid of $2,350 was a 27,910 @ 2y Jedi fresh with 115 lbs.  A Red Devour 3 yr old milking 129 lbs. & backed by 5 EX or VG dams sold for $2,250 while a 29,530 Bourbon milking 117 lbs. and backed by 3 EX dams sold for $2,100. 

The group of first and second lactation cows offered averaged right $1,650.  The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

Topping the February Dairy Production Sale on February 16, 2021 was a beautifully balanced springing heifer by Tatoo.  This junior 2 yr old candidate for 2021 was due to sexed Thunder Storm in March and commanded a final bid of $2,400.   Her Beemer dam was followed by a VG granddam then 4 Excellent dams.   The top price achieved on fresh cows was $2,050.  Two cows reached this level, a 28,280 4.0 1126 @ 1-11 Deano milking 120 lbs. in her second lactation and a 26,030 4.1 1056 @ 1-11 House fresh with 136 lbs.  Two other cows were close behind at the $2,000 mark.   A 37,950 4.3 1644 @ 2y Channing milking 119 lbs. and a 26,400 4.2 1107 @ 2y Slamdunk milking 115 lbs. were struck off for $2,000 each.

With feed prices on the rise and milk prices showing downward trends the impact on cow prices is naturally negative.   The January Dairy Production Sale on January 12, 2021 at the Great Northern Sales Arena experienced prices that were not as strong as they had been in the later months of 2020.  A nice uddered group of first and second lactation fresh cows was offered with both Registered and grade cows selling.   The high price of the sale came on a VG 30,120 4.1 1230 Baseboard daughter fresh one month and milking 145 lbs. on test day.   This eighth generation VG or EX commanded a final bid of $2,450.   Close behind at $2,400 was an Euclid daughter milking 121 lbs. after making 29,350 4.7 1366 at 2-07.  A sweet uddered Headliner milking 134 lbs. after making 33,712 @ 2-00 sold for $2,100 and a third lactation Fellowship milking 151 lbs. on her January test sold for $2,050.  Two bred heifers due in March sold with each commanding $1,150.  The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

     With a chilly, frosty morning to begin the day, the December Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern was held December 15, 2020.   While the colder temperatures seemed to keep some people away, those that were in attendance were treated to a very fine group of first and second lactation cows that were milking extremely well and definitely looked the part!

     Commanding the top price of the day at $2,850 was a beautifully balanced Brewmaster daughter milking 113 lbs. in her second lactation.  An easy VG cow, she was scored GP-82 dry and had an impressive 2-00 record of 26,970 4.5 1225 3.3 886.  A Petrone 2 yr old milking 104 lbs.  on her first test sold for $2,450 while a Kingboy 2 yr old just fresh and pushing the 80 lb. mark sold for $2,400.  This young, registered cow was backed by 9 Excellent or Very Good dams in the Snow-N Denise Dellia family.  The high selling Jersey cow at $1,775 was a Showdown 2 yr old milking 54 lbs. and backed by a VG-88 dam then 4 generations. EX. 

     A total of 16 cows sold for $2,000 or more with all the milking cows average $1,706. The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

Holiday Fashions at the Northern ~ December, 5, 2020

     It was gorgeous December weather, the line-up of cows & heifers looked sensational, interest ran high, a tremendous crowd was on hand and the sales team carried all kinds of phone/online bids!  A combination that made for a successful Holiday Fashions at the Northern sale on December 5, 2020 at the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac, WI.

     The sale featured 107 lots of Holsteins, Brown Swiss and Jerseys with Arethusa Farm offering 37 head from their elite herd at Litchfield, CT.   Chris Hill, Kevin Jorgensen and Chad Ryan assisted Rick & Paula Bovre in selections for the sale.  And the consignors certainly offered some of their best! Many positive comments were heard about the remarkable group selling all the way from September heifer calves to cows milking 159 lbs. Cattle sold to buyers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, New Hampshire, Louisiana, Texas, Idaho, and Germany.

     Attracting a great deal of attention was the red & white dry cow offered by Cedar Lane Farm LLC, Oldwick, NJ.   Milk&Honey A Mariska-Red-ET VG-87 at 2-02 sold due later December to FG Jacot-Red-ET.  Impressive now, one can only imagine how she will look 30 days fresh!  Her 2E-93 dam is a two-time National Show Grand Champion and completes 7 generations Excellent in a pedigree filled with All-Americans.   Brooke Clark, Cornish Flat, NH placed the final bid of $6,900 to add her to their GMC herd.

     Many inquiries were received on the Red Diamondback winter yearling for 2021 selling from the EX-94 Rosedale Lucky-Rose-Red, Res. All-American R&W Aged Cow 2018.  When the gavel came down at $5,000, Adam Hansmann, Hull, IA was the successful bidder on this Oakfield Corners Dairy consignment. 

     A standout in the awesome row of bred heifers was the consignment of Cole Mahlkuch, Juda, WI.   Budjon-Vail Drman Annie-ET had claimed Res. Jr. All-Wisconsin Spring Yearling honors for Cole this summer and sold due in June to sexed Thunder Storm.  Her dam is an EX-90 Sid from the two-time Midwest Spring National Grand Champion, Milksource Goldwn Africa-ET EX-95.   Chloe Kinnard, Casco, WI bid $5,000 with aspirations of claiming more honors in 2021 with Annie. 

     Trent & Kelsey Hendrickson, Blanchardville, WI offered 3 outstanding young cows in the sale.  Trent-Way Taylor VG-86 at 2-04 sold milking 104 lbs. and looking like a 9th generation Excellent.   This big, black Atwood was purchased by Josh Silverthorn, Omro, WI for $4,400.  Another of their consignments, Trent-Way Raziela-ET GP-84 at 2y sold for $4,200 to Tony Fincutter, Elkhorn, WI.   This King Bailey sold milking 112 lbs., bred to sexed Cheers and backed by 12 Excellent dams in the Roxy family.

     A summer Junior two-year-old prospect for 2021 caught the eye of many.  Black-Rock Roses Rona is a Sidekick from the EX-90 Jr. All-American Jr. 3-Year-Old for 2019, Ms Tora-Ranway Whiterose-ET who completes 5 generations Excellent in the Blackrose family.  Consigned by Alek & Brooke Krueger, Hazel Green, WI, Rona sold due in June to Hancock.  Calista LaCrosse, Kewaunee, WI placed the final bid of $4,300.

     Among the Excellent cows offered was St.-Jacob G-Chain Hezzy-ET EX-90.   This Gold Chain daughter of the All-American, All-Canadian Hezbollah EX-92 sold due back in June with a King Doc heifer calf.   Consigned by Budjon Farms & Peter & Lyn Vail, Lomira, WI, Hezzy is headed to Pennsylvania.  Todd Lohr, Hooversville, PA paid $4,250 to add this outstanding individual to his herd.

     Another of the Excellent cows offered was the Jr. All-American nominee, Webb View Betsy Sanchez EX-94.   Due back in March with an Unstopabull heifer calf, Betsy sold for $4,000 to Callen Damrow and Jaden Wilks, Pocatello, Idaho.  

     The high selling Brown Swiss came from Arethusa Farm and will now make her home at Daniel Rossiter’s farm, Mannsville, NY.   Arethusa WF Nessa is a super stylish Winningformula daughter from the highly successful Nora family.  Serviced to Daredevil, she sold for $3,600.   Arethusa also consigned the high selling Jersey, Arethusa Colton Sweetie.  By Colton from the EX-93 Res. All-American Hired Gun daughter of Season, EX-94 and 3x All-American, she sold for $3,550 to Katie Pfsiffer, New Lisbon, WI.

   At day’s end the 107 whole lots averaged $2,582.  The sales team included Chris Hill and Kevin Jorgensen in the sale box with Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh and Chad Ryan fielding bids.   Jordan Siemers handled the very active online bidding via Cowbuyer.com.  Elise Bleck and Kylie Nickels presented the cattle in the ring.  The barn crew consisting of Ben & Jared Buske, Tyler Endres, Brady Engquist, Dawson & Kylie Nickels, David Petersheim and Jon Powers had the cattle in top form.  Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale. 

 

    

Great Northern -916 ~ November, 24, 2020

     A second production sale was held in November due to the increased interest from consignors wanting to sell cattle.  The November Dairy Production Sale II was held November 24, 2020 and featured 48 first and second lactation cows in full flow of milk. 

     Interest from buyers was strong and led to consistent bidding with steady prices throughout the sale.   The high price of $3,250 cam on a GP-83 Legendary daughter milking 134 lbs. only fresh 3 weeks in her 2nd lactation after making 37,10 4.0 1488 3.1 1158 at 1-10.   Her herd mate by Bandares commanded a final bid of $2,750.  She sold milking 105 lbs. only 2 weeks fresh!   Another Legendary sold for $2,700.   This one made 26,760 4.3 1157 3.3 875 @ 1-10 and sold milking 94 lbs. just 12 days fresh.   A House 2 yr old milking 118 lbs. sold for $2,650.  The sale included a VG Ayrshire fresh with her 4th calf and milking 110 lbs.   She sold for $1800.  A total of 16 cows achieved the $2,000+ mark.

Great Northern-915 ~ November, 17, 2020

     The prices were very steady on November 17 at the November Dairy Production Sale at the Great Northern Sales Arena. The sale offered the usual good uddered fresh young cows along with a group from a retiring dairyman that included several high producing dry cows.  A group of big springing heifers sold as well.    

     The high price of the day came on a 2nd lactation Alphabet daughter milking 123 lbs. after making 26,517 4.0 1054 3.3 865 @ a-10.  She sold for $2,300.  Selling for $2,200 was a 2nd lactation De-Su Rookie 11057 daughter milking 130 lbs.   At 1-10 she made 28,150 3.8 1059 2.9 808.  Also selling for $2,200 was a King Doc 2 yr old milking 94 lbs. A total of 11 cows topped the $2,000 mark.   Among the group of dry cows, the high seller was a Homer daughter with 31,868 3.8 1217 3.2 1010 owner-sampler testing at 2-02 and due in December to Houdini.  She sold for $1,625.  The high selling bred heifer for the day at $1,850 was a registered Dempsey daughter due in December to Diamondback.   Her pedigree included a VG-88 1238F dam, then 2 dams at EX-93 followed by VG-87 & EX-90 dams.

Spruce Lawn Farm Milking Herd & Bred Heifer Dispersal ~ October, 27, 2020

     The picturesque Spruce Lawn Farm, Plymouth, Wisconsin was home base for Glennlawn Holsteins for 58 years.  Breeding for strength and multiple generations of excellence at Spruce Lawn Farm resulted in an impressive herd of big framed dairy cows with deep pedigrees to match.  The current lactation average was 25,358 3.9% 999 3.1% 792.  Glenn & Linda Ubbelohde and family dispersed the Glennlawn milking herd and bred heifers on October 27, 2020 at the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac, WI.

     A favorite brood cow in the herd was Maldwyn Trixie Linjet EX-95 5E DOM who was nominated All-American in 2008 and 2009 and received the Nasco Type & Production award at the 2009 World Dairy Expo.   It was only fitting that the high seller was an own daughter of Trixie!  Glennlawn Brok Baltimore-ET EX-91 EX-MS sold milking 110 lbs. after making 27,320 4.4 1215 3.2 880 at 3-04.   This Brokaw x Trixie commanded a final bid of $4,450 from John Krueger, Hilbert, WI.  

     Another cow with substantial influence in the herd was Winterose Gibson Phoebe EX-93 2E.   The second-high seller, Glennlawn Blake Paris, hailed from Phoebe’s family.   This VG-87 Blake sold just fresh with her second calf and milking over 100 lbs. to the Ledden Family, Auburndale, WI for $4,300.   

     A young cow with tremendous potential and a pedigree to match was Ms Triple-T-Ent Prestige-ET.   This High Octane junior 2-year-old was milking 98 lbs. and is backed by the 2E-95 All-American nominee, Durham Poppi; then EX-94 2E All-American Gold Price and the renowned brood cow, Dundee Paige EX-96 3E.   John Krueger paid $4,050 to add her to his Hilbert, WI herd.  

     Fellow Sheboygan county Holstein breeders, William Schultz III and Yvonne Preder, Waldo, WI added the EX-92, Glennlawn Golddust Pluto to the Lyn-Vale herd for $3,550.  Another member of the Phoebe family, Pluto was milking 120 lbs. and is backed by an EX-92 2E, 30,290 Sanchez then the EX-93 2E Phoebe.   Pluto’s sister by Jacoby was next on the high seller’s list at $3,500.   Glennlawn Jacoby Pugsly VG-88 EX-MS sold milking 104 lbs. and bred back to Apple-Crisp.  She completes the trio making their new home at the Krueger’s in Hilbert, WI.

     High selling bred heifer for the day at $3,375 was the April 2019 Denver due in the spring to Handsome from the EX-92 Golden Dreams, Glennlawn Gdreams Everly, who sold as Lot 1 for $3,300.   A potential fourth generation Excellent, Glennlawn Denver Ember sold to Calista LaCrosse, Kewaunee, WI.  

     A nice crowd was on hand to recognize and support the Ubbelohde’s many years of breeding.  An average of $1,910 was attained on 75 lots.    The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. with Chris Hill selling the sale, Kevin Jorgensen providing pedigree updates and Rick Bovre, Brian Behnke, Chad Ryan, Ron Roskopf and Brandon Ferry fielding the bids.  Jordan Siemers represented Cowbuyer.com.  

Great Northern-913 ~ October, 13, 2020

     The October Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern generated good interest from dairymen around Wisconsin and northern Illinois.   The sale was held on October 13, 2020 which proved to be a beautiful fall day.  In addition to the many high producing fine uddered first and second lactation cows being offered, a few high type, deep pedigreed young cows sold.   These cows created considerable interest with several phone bids being placed.   The high price of the day was $5,000 which was achieved on two different cows.  The Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin Four-Year-Old by Avalanche was the first to hit the $5,000 mark.  This impressive young cow sold due back to Defiant and backed by 4 EX dams.   A very promising King Doc milking yearling fresh just 2 weeks was the second to be struck off at $5,000.  This exciting young cow is backed by a VG-88 Gold Chip then 4 generations Excellent. 

     An ultra-dairy Superspring daughter fresh with her 2nd calf and milking 110 lbs. sold for $2,500.  This beautiful uddered cow made 30,650 4.2 1278 3.2 994 @ 1-10.   A Hail daughter fresh at 1-11 and milking over 90 lbs. sold for $2,300 as did and Undenied junior 2-year-old bred to King Doc and backed by 94- and 95-point dams.   A group of grade springing heifers sold, all A.I. sired and bred, with a high of $1,550 on these well grown heifers due in November and early December.

     At day’s end the milking cows averaged $1,885.   The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

Fond du Lac Classic with Guest Consignments from Lost-Elm Jerseys ~ September, 29, 2020

     The Fond du Lac Classic with guest consignments from Lost-Elm Jerseys was held on September 29, 2020 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  A nice crowd was on hand for the stunning line-up of Holsteins and Jerseys being offered which were primarily first and second lactation fresh cows.

     Generating a great deal of interest was the Solomon bred heifer consigned by Megan Moede & Katelyn Ledvina, Algoma, WI.   This December 2018 model sold due the first of December with a Jordy heifer calf and is backed by an EX-94 Atwood that was nominated All-American in 2015, Indianhead Redcarpet Tia-ET.  The pedigree continues with an EX-92 Milan then the 2E-95 GMD DOM Inspiration Tina who is a 2x Reserve All-American.   Rachel Gries, Valders, WI placed the final bid of $4,600 to add this promising heifer to her growing herd. 

     The high selling cow was consigned by Mystic Valley Dairy & Kevin Jorgensen, Sauk City, WI.  This VG-86 Union daughter made 25,530 4.4 1111 3.3 830 at 1-10 and sold fresh with a last test day weight of 131 lbs.   Her dam is a VG 35,350 4.1 1454 3.2 1120 Pat-Red daughter of their 2E-93, 42,640M Goldwyn daughter from the All-World, KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET 4E-96 DOM 31*.   This well-balanced dairy machine is certain to move up in score and make another impressive record for her new owners, Country Aire Dairy at Greenleaf, WI who placed the final bid of $3,500.

     Following closely on the buyers list was another consignment from the Moedes, Mead-Manor Solomon Alexa VG-85 VG-MS.  At 1-10 this Solomon daughter made 20,720 4.6 961 3.4 713 and sold milking 87 lbs. in her second lactation and serviced to Denver.   Alexa descends from the Chief Adeen family, her dam a sister to the dam of World Dairy Expo Junior Show Supreme Champion 2019, Mead-Manor Def Adeline-Red EX-94.  Bob Huibregtse paid $3,450 to add her to his Plymouth, WI herd.  Also from this cow family, the Moedes consigned an Undeniable bred heifer due in December with a Moovin heifer calf.   Her dam is an EX-93 39,510 Atwood from Chief Adeen herself!   Todd Lohr paid $3,300 to take her to Hooversville, PA.  

      Two different Jerseys shared the limelight as high sellers at $2,200 each.   A Barnabas 2 yr old from Lost Elm sold to Sarah & Katelyn Henschel, Elkhart Lake, WI.   This Summer Junior 2 sold bred back to sexed Bontino and backed by World Dairy Expo and All-American Jersey Show Junior Champion, Lost-Elm Tequila Petunia EX-93.   A stylish VIP winter calf from Lost-Elm sold to Shari Strickhouser, Elkhorn, WI for $2,200.  Her dam is a VG-87 at 2-00 Oliver-P, then an EX show winning Topeka.   

     At day’s end the 45 Holsteins averaged $2,088 while the 24 Jerseys averaged $1,883.   Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale which was sponsored by the Fond du Lac County Holstein Breeders Association.   Tim Schindler sold the sale with Kevin Jorgensen providing pedigree updates.  Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh & Chad Ryan served as ringmen.  Jordan Siemers handled the online bidding via Cowbuyer.com.        

 

Kleinsview Milking Herd & Bred Heifer Dispersal ~ September, 15, 2020

     Beautiful weather and a superb uddered herd made for a good day on September 15, 2020 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  Troy & Kasey Klein, Waldo, Wisconsin dispersed their milking herd and springing heifers along with a handful of heifer calves.  The Klein’s breeding program emphasized high components and longevity.  This resulted in a beautiful framed herd with dairy strength and outstanding udders throughout.  The current rolling herd average was 22,854 4.3% 979 3.1% 705 with the SCC average at 140.  

     A nice crowd was on hand with many breeders from the Sheboygan county area participating in the sale and supporting their friends, the Klein family. The high seller found her way back to Sheboygan county with a final bid of $4,200 placed by Erin Jens, Sheboygan Falls, WI.   This Red Adonis fresh with her third calf and milking 110 lbs. is a daughter of the queen of the herd, Kleinsview Destn Velvet-Red EX-94 3E and Junior All-American R&W in 2017.  Another sale highlight was the Red Jacot bred heifer from an EX-93 3E Advantage with 38,080 4.9 1877.  Due in December to Unstopabull-Red, this impressive heifer sold to Andy & Sarah Lenkaitis, St. Charles, IL for $3,700.   Claiming the title of third high seller was a herd favorite, Kleinsview Dfnt Devlegg-Red VG-87.  This Defiant just calved earlier in the month and looks to make a big move up in score!   At 2-11 she made 24,65 3.3 821 and is backed by VG-88 and EX-92 dams.  Calista LaCrosse added her to her growing herd of Red & Whites at Kewaunee, WI.   Devlegg’s September 2nd Absolute heifer calf commanded another $2,050.  

     A standout in black & white was the VG-86 Atwood, Kleinsview Atwood Celest-ET with 24,654 5.2 1288 3.3 813 at 3-03.  She sold due to Unstopabull or Angus and looks to be a high scoring cow.   Her 3E-93 dam completes 5 generations EX or VG going back to Leadman Coral 2E-93 GMD DOM who was a major foundation cow in the Kleinsview herd.  Country Aire Dairy, Greenleaf, WI added this promising cow to their herd for $3,500. 

     The 68 cows and springing heifers were steady from beginning to end of the sale and averaged $2,360.   We thank the Kleins for all they have contributed to the industry and wish them continued success.

Great Northern-910 ~ August, 18, 2020

Steady was the name of the game at the August Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern on August 18, 2020.  Topping the line-up of 63 fresh first and second lactation cows at $2,700 was a good-looking Jett fresh with 2nd calf and milking over 100 lbs.   At 1-10 she made 22,200 4.1  905  3.2  708 and is backed by a 37,410 dam.  Her herdmate by Duke was next on the buyers list at $2,600.  This top notch 2 yr old was milking 101 lbs. on her July test.   Commanding a final bid of $2,550 was a Jedi just fresh 2 weeks and milking 120 lbs. after making 29,490 @ 1-10.  A Very Good-85 Altahotshot milking 133 lbs. sold for $2,400.  Bidding was consistent throughout the sale resulting in a $1,760 average.  The cows offered relocated to 20 different farms throughout Wisconsin.   Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

Shiloh Brown Swiss Dispersal ~ July, 28, 2020

Demand for Brown Swiss was verified at the Great Northern with the dispersal of the Shiloh Dairy herd July 28, 2020 in Fond du Lac, WI. Brown Swiss Enterprises, Inc., managed the sale for the Speirs Family: Gordon, Cathy and Travis. Cathy purchased three Brown Swiss heifers in 2006. No other live cattle were added. Cathy partnered with Sunshine Genetics on a “you get one, we get one” embryo implant program. Embryos were purchased to add additional cow families such as Snickerdoodle and Sindy. From this great foundation, an impressive and in-demand herd was developed. The results were as follows: 151 head sold, 52 buyers from 14 states took home 57 cows, 30 bred heifers, and 64 open heifers and calves for an average price of $2,135.40.

Topping the sale was Lot 6717 Amber Rae High Society ET at $16,800, a 10/15/2018 Jo-Lane Dario Hilton daughter of Amber Rae Kannons Sindy ‘V88’ with 34,840m. Society, a donor dam, is currently the #26 PPR heifer and sold bred to Cozy Nook Carl Trek (sexed). This contract heifer was purchased by Pine Tree Dairy, Marshallville, OH. She is one of 9 animals selected by Pine Tree Dairy.

A pair of animals rang the bell at $5,100. The first to reach the number was Lot 4527 Shiloh Biver Shavon ‘V87 – CERT’ with 31,230m at 1-10. She was now milking 112 lbs at 3-0 and pregnant on the first service to sexed Toby. This descendent of 2000 National Total Performance Winner Blessing PR Shirlan ‘3E93’ will be calling Bo-Tex Swiss, Waxahacie, Texas, home.

Next at $5,100 was Lot 6433 Shiloh Carl Peggy, the #45 PPR heifer, going to Andrew Sommers, Rittman, OH. Sired by Kulp-Terra Lucky Carl, this 7/22/2018 donor dam was bred to Triangle Acres Carter Juke. Her dam also sold as Lot 3983 Shiloh Biver Penny ‘V86’ with 1,424f at 1-11. Nor-Bert Farm, IN, added her for the reasonable price of $2,900. The source of this cow family was Triangle Acres Coll Polly ‘E92’ with 40,070m.

     Steady was word that best describes the July Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern on July 21, 2020.  Fifty-eight fresh cows sold with prices consistent throughout the sale for both freestall/parlor cows and stall barn cows.

      The top price of $2,950 came on a VG-88 Bradnick.  Fresh with her third calf, this silky black dairy cow looked like a sure bet for Excellent! Close behind at $2,750 was a VG Malone daughter.  This impressive Red & White was fresh second calf and moving towards the 100 lb. mark.   Her EX-92 37,080 dam traces back to the 3E-96 GMD “Blackrose”.   A VG Premium daughter milking 95 lbs. after making 28,259 @ 1-11 sold for $2,500 while a grade Gregarious daughter milking 90 lbs. just fresh in her second lactation sold for $2,350.   Another grade, this one by Headliner & milking 126 lbs. in her second lactation sold for $2,200.  The majority of the cows sold in the $1500 - $2,000 range.

With milk prices looking very positive in the coming months, the enthusiasm and interest in purchasing good uddered young fresh cows are on the rise!  At the June Dairy Production Sale on June 23rd, the barn was filled with an exceptional group of first and second lactation cows, all recently fresh with low SCC and beautiful udders.  Cows sold from freestall/parlor dairies as well as stall barn operations. 

Four cows topped the $3,000 mark with a high of $3,200 coming on a sensational Jedi milking 120 lbs. after making 24,944 4.1 1012 3.3 815 at 1-11.  Her GP-84 26,800 4.4 1181 Kingboy dam is backed by 4 VG dams with records to 39,180M.  Close behind at $3,100 was a barn favorite, a Beemer milking 116 lbs. in her second lactation after making 19,786 4.3 855 3.4 675 at 2-05.  This tall, well balanced young cow will be a high scoring one as you would expect from the Chief Adeens.  Her VG-87 EX-MS dam by Windbrook then a 2E-93 Atwood from the 2E-94 DOM Chief Adeen followed by the 2E-94 DOM Starbuck Ada.  Selling for $3,025 was an Altashock daughter fresh 45 days and milking 121 lbs.  At 1-10 she made 22,690 4.3 966 3.2 714 and is backed by a VG-86 37,070 4.3 1606 3.0 1110 Day daughter.   Her herdmate by Troy sold for $3,000.  Classified GP-84 VG-MS at 2y, she made 22,439 3.6 805 3.0 669 at 2-03 and sold milking 108 lbs. in her second lactation. 

Heading the list of 15 cows selling over the $2,000 mark was a Mogul milking 110 lbs. after making 21,733 4.3 939 3.2 706 at 1-10.   She sold for $2,975.  An average of $1,961 was attained on the 52 cows sold in this sale managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.  

Great Northern-906 ~ May, 26, 2020

The May Dairy Production sale on May 26, 2020 was the first live cattle auction at Great Northern since Covid-19 came on the scene!  There was good interest from several dairyman looking to add some high quality, high component fresh milk to their tank!  A total of 10 cows cracked the $2,000 mark with the high price at $2,450.  Two cows shared high seller honors at the $2,450 price.  A 23,610 4.6 1088 3.2 746 @ 2-00 Damaris fresh and milking 118 lbs. and a 24,663 4.5 1109 2.7 675 McNuggets fresh with 125 lbs.

Next on the buyer’s list at $2,400 was an Altashock milking 102 lbs. after making 20,670 4.5 940 3.0 623 @ 2-02.  Another Altashock milking 109 lbs. in her second lactation sold for $2,350.   A Phantom 2 yr old milking 84 lbs. and backed by a 35,548-dam sold for $2,250 as did a McGirt 2 yr old milking 104 lbs.  All cows averaged $1,667 with a mix of both Registered and Grade cows as well as stall-barn cows and freestall-parlor cows selling.   The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

 

Spring Fashions at the Northern ~ April, 14, 2020

     With stay at home guidelines in place due to covid-19, the decision was made to move the Spring Fashions at the Northern sale to April 14, 2020 and change the format to a tag auction. Consignors provided photos and/or videos of their consignments and all were available on YouTube for potential buyers’ viewing pleasure.

     Bidding was available at Cowbuyer.com in the two days leading up to sale day. At noon on Tuesday, April 14th, Chris Hill, auctioneer, and Kevin Jorgensen, pedigree expert, went live on Cowbuyer.com to auction off the consignments. Base prices were established by the consignors. Bidding began at the base price or the current bid price on Cowbuyer.com.  Buyers place their bids online via Cowbuyer or with sale staff present at the Sales Arena.  

    Claiming the top spot on the buyers list was the consignment of Synergy Family Dairy, Pulaski, WI.   Synergy Doorman Reggiano had recently classified EX-90 EX-MS in her second lactation.  She sold milking 105 lbs. and pregnant to Stantons Chief.   This Sr. 3-Year-Old Doorman has a welded-on udder and completes 11 generations Excellent or Very Good.  She sold to T&L Cattle Co., Rosedale, B.C.  We are certain to hear more from this impressive young cow!  The choice of 3 March 2020 red and white Jordy heifer calves offered by Hilrose Dairy LLC, Sherwood, WI generated a great deal of interest.   Their dam is the 2018 Nasco International Type & Production Winner as well as 2018 Wisconsin Cow of the Year and two-time Reserve All-American, Hilrose Advent Anna-Red-ET EX-94 3E GMD. Taylor Wittmus, Valders, WI paid $3,750 to take his pick of these 3 growth calves who are not only potential 11th generation Excellents, but also have several sisters who have graced the winner’s circle at National shows!

     A fancy winter calf for the 2020 show season was offered by Bella-View and Forest-Ridge Holsteins.  This sweet Doorman hailed from the Ashlyns, her dam an EX-90 EX-MS 33,450 Corvette from the All-Time All-American and World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Tri-Day Ashlyn-ET EX-96 2E GMD DOM.   Adella & Ainsley Loehr, Eden, WI paid $3,600 for this well balanced, deep ribbed heifer calf.  After having a big year in 2019 with a Denver daughter, the Vandoske Family, Cleveland, WI paid $3,400 to add Jeffrey-Way Denver Thaddea to their 2020 show string.  This outstanding winter yearling is backed by 8 generations Excellent from the “T” family that has been so influential in the Jeffrey-Way herd at Belleville, WI. 

     Walk-Era Farms, Wisconsin Dells, WI consigned an EX-93 mammary system Solomon 3-year-old who scored EX-90 on her first score earlier this year.   Walk-Era Soloman Marykate sold milking 100 lbs. last test and pregnant to sexed Moovin.   This sixth generation Excellent was purchased by Brandon Smith, Pulaski, WI for $3,350.   The high selling consignment in the Nise-N-Fancy Fanfare of High Type was a tall, long red and white Jordy winter calf.  Sydney & MacKenzie Day, Silverlake, Indiana paid $3,300 for this promising young lady from a VG Red Marker followed by 2 EX dams in the Nise-N-Fancy herd of Rich & Kristin Nisen and their family, Leesburg, Indiana. Selling for $3,000 was the Atwood winter yearling bred to sexed Altitude-Red offered by Reggie & Krysty Kamps, Darlington, WI.   This silky black daughter of KHW Regiment Apple B-Red-ETN EX-90 sold to Nathan Donnay, Glencoe, MN.

Spring Fever Sale ~ March, 17, 2020

Just as the unsettling news of Covid-19 was beginning to unfold, the Spring Fever Sale took place on St. Patrick’s Day at the Great Northern Sales Arena.   This March 17, 2020 sale was presented by Crescentmead, Ixonia, WI and Milk Source Genetics, Kaukauna, WI.  The sale featured a line-up with something for everyone: high producing Excellent cows, promising young cows, big bred heifers and deep pedigreed show heifers of all ages.

A cow that caught everyone’s eye with her awesome, welded-on udder was Milksource Anabelle-Red-ET.  GP-83 VG-MS in her first lactation, this Boris daughter of 2x Unanimous All-American, Miss Apple Snapple-Red-ET EX-95 2E was fresh, milking 124 lbs. and certainly needs to see the classifier!  When the gavel dropped at $6,500, RK Genetics, New Glarus, WI was the new owner of this exciting young cow.

Another high-quality cow from the Milk Source group was the EX-90 EX-MS, Milksource Clark Adorable.   This impressive dry cow with 29,964 4.2 1261 3.2 954 at 2-10 sold due in May to Diamondback.  Hailing from Starbuck Ada’s cow family, this sixth generation Excellent sold for $3,900 to Feltman, Stuewe and Steinhagen, Hamburg, MN. 

A red Altitude-Red winter calf for 2020 created quite a stir.  Chloe Kinnard, Casco, WI claimed this fancy lady for $3,600.  Crescentmead sold this young lady who is backed by a Jacot 2 yr old from an EX-91 33,780 Acme daughter of the EX-94 2E, Reserve All-American, Wilstar-RS Tlt Limited-Red.  

The favorite winter calf in black and white claimed a final bid of $3,200.   Milksource Doorman Ace-ET is an own daughter of 2018 International Holstein Show Reserve Grand Champion, Weeks Dundee Anika EX-97 2E.  Frank & Diane Borba and Blair Weeks placed the final bid on this exciting young lady.

77 whole lots sold for an average of $1,837 to buyers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, California and Pennsylvania.  Andy Steinhagen, Kylie Nickels and Grant Vosters presented the cattle in the ring.   Chris Hill sold the sale with Norman Nabholz providing the color commentary.   Fielding bids were Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh, Chad Ryan and Ron Roskopf.  Katie Schultz represented many bidders on Cowbuyer.com

Rotesown Milking Herd & Select Heifer Dispersal ~ March, 10, 2020

A nice crowd assembled at the Great Northern Sales Arena on March 10, 2020 for the Rotesown Milking Herd and Select Heifer Dispersal.   Brian & Lori Rote, McConnell, Illinois chose to disperse all salable milking cows along with a select group of deep pedigreed heifers.  The Rotes have bred 120 Excellent cows over the years.  Their breeding program concentrates on outstanding type with special emphasis on longevity.   The bidding was active throughout the sale with buyers from Illinois and Wisconsin both represented on the buyers list. 

A herd favorite topped the sale at $3,900.  Rotesown Doorman Bermuda VG-88 sold fresh in December and looking to move into the Excellent category quite easily.   From the same cow family as World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Rosiers Blexy Goldwyn EX-96 2E, Bermuda was claimed by Colton Meier, Ridott, IL.   Another of the exceptional Doorman daughters in the herd, Rotesown Doorman Egypt-ET EX-90 EX-MS sold to John Krueger, Hilbert, WI for $3,050.   Backed by EX-92 and EX-93 dams from a cow family that can claim 5 individuals at 95 points, this 3 yr old has a very promising future!   

A standout in the row of show age heifers was the Red Rager summer yearling from 10 generations EX and VG.   Rotesown Rager Flicker-Red created a spirited bidding war with the gavel falling at $2,700.  Mike Paulus added her to his Fredonia, WI herd.  The 2019 Junior Champion from the Stephenson County Fair commanded a final bid of $2,500 from Megan Busker, Ridott, IL.   This Kingboy fall yearling for 2020 sold bred to Corvette and is backed by an EX-91 Atwood with 32,130M. 

A total of 103 head sold with the group averaging $1502.  Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale with Chris Hill wielding the gavel and Kevin Jorgensen providing pedigree updates.   Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh, Chris McCullough, Chad Ryan and Kaleb Kruse representing Cowbuyer.com completed the sale staff.

Great Northern - 902 ~ February, 11, 2020

In general, the enthusiasm we saw in January did not carry through to the February sale.  The cows selling were an impressive group cranking outs lots of low SCC milk from good, tight, well attached udders.  Unfortunately, there just weren’t as many producers looking to buy.   The top price of the day was $3,175.  This came on a sporty Red Avalanche milking 85 lbs. in her first lactation and bred back to sexed Awesome-Red.  Her maternal line was the renowned Roxys with her dam EX-90 27,757M completing 11 generations Excellent or Very Good.  A third calf Mogul just fresh and looking like a sure bet for Excellent sold for $3,000.  Already classified VG-88, this well balanced, good uddered 100 lb. producer is backed by 6 Excellent dams.  A VG-87 EX-MS Monterey milking 110 lbs. after making 25,010 4.2 1050 sold for $2,850.  Recently scored EX-90 EX-MS, a 24,330 4.4 1069 Golden Dreams daughter milking 101 lbs. in her second lactation and bred back to Jedi sold for $2,800.  The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

Great Northern-901 ~ January, 14, 2020

     A nice crowd was on hand January 14, 2020 for the first sale of the new year at Great Northern.   There was good interest in the January Dairy Production Sale which featured an outstanding group of 1st and 2nd lactation fresh cows with sensational udders.  Of the 64 head, half sold for $1,900 or higher with 20 head selling in the $2,000 to $3,350 range.

   Two cows sold for $3,350 each.  Both were fresh one month in their 2nd lactation.   The GP-83 VG-MS Damaris daughter made 25,815 4.4 1122 @ 1-10 and was milking 118 lbs. on her first test.   The GP-83 Altashock made 25,494 4.5 1144 @ 1-11 and had 132 lbs. on her first test.   Both cows looked to be VG on their next visit with the classifier.   Another cow looking to move up in score was a Branson daughter with 17,807 4.9 869 @ 1-10.   She was milking 93 lbs. first test and is backed by 6 Excellent dams.  

     Only two springing heifers were offered in the sale, but the high price of $1,200 came on a McCutchen due to Ransom from a 23,510 4.5 1065 Sid dam.

Great Northern Holiday Sale ~ December, 17, 2019

     A large crowd filled the Great Northern Sales Arena on December 17th for the 2019 Holiday Sale.  Marking the 900th sale at Great Northern, the sale featured the Car-Bon Holsteins Milking Herd and Springing Heifer Dispersal as well as the Indies-View-GW Dispersal.  The bidding was active with cattle selling to buyers in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Arizona. A total of 90 head sold for an average of $1,920. 

     The top price of the day came on a bred heifer that had everyone excited.  A senior 2-year-old prospect for 2020, this Awesome-Red sold due this spring with an Altitude-Red heifer calf. Her dam is the 8th generation Excellent and 4th generation All-American nominee in milking form, Rolling-Spring G Escence-ET EX-95 2E.   The Gruenes family of Richmond, Minnesota placed the final bid of $5,500 to own this big, black beauty consigned by Dr. Chris Keim, Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.  Also generating a great deal of interest was the EX-91 Sanchez consigned by Kyle, Judy & Richard Knutson, Andover, Minnesota. Loaded with dairy strength, Ocean-View Sanchez Zida sold milking 166 lbs. in her third lactation and serviced to Diamondback.   An 8th generation Excellent or Very Good, Zida made 31,610 4.4 1379 3.3 1046 at 2-11.  She was the choice of Larry Dykstra, Orange City, Iowa for $4,700.  Another young cow with a big fan club was the VG-87 Doorman 3-year-old from the 2017 All-American 150,000 lb. Cow, Blondin Goldwyn Subliminal-ETS EX-96 2E.  Serviced to Sidekick and milking 90 lbs., this consignment from Budjon-Vail, Lomira, Wisconsin sold to Matthew Nolt, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for $4,000.

     The Indies-View-GW Dispersal included eight Ayrshires with several national show winners in their pedigrees.  The prolific brood cow and 2015 Reserve All-Canadian Junior 3-Year-Old sold for $4,300 to Red Carpet Holsteins and Garrett Schmidt, Kirkland, Illinois.  Yellow Briar J Beverly EX-91 has not only been a consistent threat in the show ring but is transmitting great type to her daughters.  Three daughters sold in the sale for $3,700, $3,550 and $2,700. The high selling Holstein from Indies-View-GW was a very promising VG Crush daughter just completing her first lactation and due back in March to Allen. Her dam is the EX-92 show winning Mogul, Kiko Mogul Mara 1095, with 25,627 5.3 1366 3.4 883 at 2-05.  Miss Mara Moonlite Crush-ET VG-85 VG-MS sold to Ty, Tacey & Hadley Ross, Mesa, AZ for $3,500.  The Indies-View-GW herd had achieved much success in the show ring on all levels and is owned by Garrett Schmidt, Melrose, WI. 

     Car-Bon Goldchip Ashlynn epitomized the Car-Bon breeding program.  This young Gold Chip fresh in her second lactation certainly needed to see the classifier.  Scored GP-83 in her first lactation, she is backed by 4 Excellent dams, all with impressive lifetime totals.  Ashlynn sold for $2,800 to Brandon Smith, Pulaski, WI. The Car-Bon herd represented 65 years of breeding.  Owned by Carl & Bonnie Werner, Beaver Dam, WI, the herd had been on a management intensive grazing program for 27 years.

     Chris Hill and Kevin Jorgensen teamed up in the sale box for this 900th sale managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.  Rounding out the sales team were Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh, Yvonne Preder, Graisson Schmidt, Jeff Stephens and Kaleb Kruse representing Cowbuyer.com

Great Northern-899 ~ November, 19, 2019

     The November Dairy Production Sale was held on November 19, 2019 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  Another good uddered, high producing group of young cows were offered in the sale. The high price of $2,500 came on two different lots.  A Gambler daughter with 24,097 4.7 1136 3.2 763 @ 1-10 was the first to achieve this price.  She sold milking 112 lbs. in her second lactation.  The other cow to sell for $2,500 was a VG-86 Senator daughter with 32,520 4.4 1415 3.1 1002 @ 1-11.   She was milking 129 lbs.  currently.   An Altahotshot milking 111 lbs. in her second lactation sold for $2,300 and a Windbrook 2-year-old milking 95 lbs. and backed by a GP-83 dam followed by 9 EX & VG dams sold for $2,000.

Great Northern-898 ~ October, 29, 2019

     Rather than the typical fall day you would expect on October 29th, we awoke to a blanket of snow!  This affected the crowd at the October Dairy Production Sale, but the bidding was still active with several phone bids.  Prices were steady throughout the sale with a slight upward tick as we have been seeing that last month or so in the sales.

     The top price for the day was $2,250 which came on a lovely uddered Union 2-year-old milking over 70 lbs. on her first test.  Her GP-83, 23,400 @ 2y dam is followed by 3 dams all at EX-93.   Selling for $2,050 was a VG Mogul milking over 90 lbs. in her second lactation after making 28,600 4.4 1261 3.1 896 at 2-00.  Her GP-83 23,100 4.9 1125 3.4 775 Doorman dam goes back to the EX-96 4E DOM Apple.  

     The sale averaged over $1,600 on all the first and second lactation cows offered in the sale.  Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

 

Holmland Farms Milking Herd & Springing Heifer Dispersal ~ October, 22, 2019

     Holmland Farms Milking Herd and Springing Heifer Dispersal was held at the Great Northern Sales Arena on October 22, 2019 for owners Richard & Grace Piechowski and family from Waupaca, WI. 

This homebred, freestall-parlor herd emphasized high quality milk and excellent herd health.  In 2018 they were awarded the Superior Quality Milk Producer award from Foremost Farms USA with an average somatic cell count of 98.   The current rolling herd average stood at 23,634 3.8% 903 3.1% 726. The Piechowski’s are very involved in the ag community and have been avid supporters of the Waupaca-Waushara Show Opportunity Sale since its inception.

     A nice crowd was on hand for the sale with active bidding throughout the day resulting in a $1,622 average on the cows and $1,319 average on the springing heifers.   The Mogul daughters were herd highlights, so it was not surprising that they claimed the top four spots on the price list! High cow at $2,700 was a VG-88 EX-MS 3-year-old milking 94 lbs. and bred back to Tropic.  Her VG-88 dam and EX-91 2E granddam both over 1000F just as she had done as a 2-year-old. Close behind at $2,650 was a VG-85 daughter just fresh with her third calf and milking 103 lbs.  At 3-00 she made 29,590 3.9 1147 3.2 933 and is backed by a GP-82 24,340 Lithium followed by 7 EX & VG dams, many with sons in A.I.  Commanding a final bid of $2,500 was a VG-85 Mogul finishing her 2-11 lactation with 23,295 4.2 983 3.2 748 and due back in February to Callen.  A VG-87 24,561 4.0 986 3.0 736 @ 2-00 Mogul due in December to Drastic-P sold for $2,400. 

     The springing heifers were very steady with a top price of $1,675 achieved on a Control daughter due in December and backed by 3 Excellent dams all over 30,000M from the Juror Faith family.  The Piechowski’s also offered three of their best pedigreed yearling heifers in the sale.  The high seller amongst this group was a fancy January 2019 Humblenkind daughter from an EX-92 Mogul with 28,470 4.4 1249 who completes 12 generations EX or VG in 13 generations of the Sweet family.

Fond du Lac Classic featuring Mahoney Holsteins Milking Herd Dispersal ~ September, 24, 2019

     The 74th Edition of the Fond du Lac Holstein Classic generated a great deal of interest from prospective buyers, both locally and out-of-state.  Sponsored by the Fond du Lac County Holstein Breeders Association, this sale featured the milking herd dispersal of Mahoney Holsteins from Cannon Falls, MN.  Held September 24, 2019 at the Great Northern Sales Arena, a good-sized crowd bid actively along with the many phone bids placed by the sale staff.

     Topping the sale at $3,300 was a beautiful uddered Pety 3 yr old milking 143 lbs. on her September test.  Consigned by Mystic Valley Dairy LLC, this potential fifth generation Very Good had an impressive 1-10 record of 30,010 4.3 1301 3.1 928.  Two additional cows sold for $3,100 each.  The VG 29,420 4.3 931 3.3 981 Doorman 3 yr old from Hilrose Dairy LLC and the VG-86 22,760 4.2 946 3.1 701 Uno 3 yr old from Rodney Zietlow.  Both impressive uddered cows with bright futures!    A 23,000 4.2 970 2.9 677 @ 1-09 Whiskey daughter from Ripps Dairy Valley LLC commanded a final bid of $2,950.

     The high seller from the Mahoney herd was a VG-86 Impression with 36,300 3.7 1333 3.0 1099 @ 2-11.   Milking 119 lbs. on her last test & serviced to Artisan-Red, she sold for $2,850.  An EX-90 EX-MS Goldsun from this Mahoney’s sold for $2,650.  This extremely youthful cow looks to pick up more points on the next classification and sold bred to Tatoo.  The 21 well balanced, good uddered homebred cows from the Mahoney’s averaged $1,852.

     The 38 consignments of fresh cows and springing heifers averaged $2,008.  The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. with Darrell Worden selling the sale.   Kevin Jorgensen provided pedigree updates and Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Yvonne Preder and Bob Sabo were the ring personnel.

 

Great Northern Fall Jersey Production Sale ~ September, 10, 2019

     A beautiful, warm day brought out a nice crowd on September 10, 2019 for the Great Northern Fall Jersey Production Sale at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  The sale featured an outstanding group of young cows along with a few bred heifers and heifer calves.  Lost Elm Jerseys and Day-Kel Jerseys provided most of the consignments with each herd offering an excellent group of good uddered cows and promising heifers.

     The high selling cow at $2,900 was a lovely udder Impression 2 yr old consigned by Debra Jirschele and Duwayne Strehlow.  Classified VG-85 and backed by 4 Excellent dams she sold to Joe & Colleen Neperman, Junction City, WI.  The just fresh, EX-93 Tequila consigned by Rosedale Genetics Ltd. commanded a final bid of $2,300 from David Gartmann, Sheboygan, WI.   Close behind at $2,250 was another Impression 2 yr old offered by Day-Kel Jerseys, David & Kelly Oberreich.  Scored VG-86 and due back with a Fireman heifer calf this potential fourth generation Excellent sold to Sarah Henschel, Elkhart Lake, WI.   Steve Boldt, Ottawa, IL paid $2,150 for a VG-87 Hired Gun 2 yr old bred back to Colton.  This beautiful uddered young cow was one of the Lost-Elm Jerseys consignments and her Thunder heifer calf sold for an additional $850.   Lost-Elm also offered a VG-88 24,772 Comerica from the EX-90 52,080M Olga who holds the record for the highest 305 day Jersey milk record in 2017.   Milking 93 lbs currently, this 3 yr old sold to View of Grace Jerseys, Random Lake, WI for $2,100.

     Prices were consistent throughout the sale on the young cows.  The heifer calves sold very well while the bred heifers were a bit soft.    The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. with Darrell Worden selling the sale and Kevin Jorgensen providing pedigree updates.   Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh and Kristin Paul rounded out the sale staff.

Great Northern-894 ~ August, 27, 2019

     The August Dairy Production Sale was held at Great Northern on August 27, 2019.  The barn was filled with first and second lactation, good uddered cows that were recently fresh and milking well. Prices were very steady throughout the sale.  The high price of $1,750 came on an All About It 2 yr old with 106 lbs. on her August test.  Her production came naturally as she is backed by 2 dams over 33,000M.  Two other cows sold for $,1700 each.  Both sired by Pety, one milking 109 lbs. after making 20,361 at 2-00, the other with 87 lbs. after making 22,722 at 1-10.  Both were awesome uddered cows! 

     A group of 8 springing heifers sold from one herd – all A.I. sired and bred from dams with records to 30,369M.  The high seller at $1,150 in this group was a Rhett daughter due to Hodedoe.  Her dam with 27,920M and the granddam at 35,740M.  Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

893rd Great Northern Sale ~ July, 23, 2019

The July Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern was held July 23, 2019.  Featured in the 61 head offered were 35 fresh young cows from Mystic Valley Dairy.  The sale’s high sellers originated from this high producing group.  Selling for $2,575 was a Red Milner 3-year-old fresh with 127 lbs. first test after making 31,480 4.0 1265 3.2 1002 at 1-11 and classifying Good Plus-83.  This young cow has a very promising future!  Her 8th generation Excellent granddam by Goldwyn has 42,640 4.5 1934, is still producing in the herd and is an own daughter of the EX-96 4E DOM, Apple! Commanding a final bid of $2,175 was a VG Delco daughter milking 149 lbs. in her second lactation after making 37,940 4.0 1535 3.1 1166 @ 1-09.  With a +2460 GTPI, this young cow completes 10 generations EX & VG.   A McCutchen daughter milking 146 lbs. in her second lactation sold for $2,000.  A 33,540-producer backed by an EX-94 33,870 Durham, this impressive cow looks to make it 6 generations EX & VG on the classifier’s next visit.

Overall, prices for the evening reflected the current dairy economy with most producers nervous about their cattle inventories relative to feed inventories. The sale averaged just shy of $1300 and was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

The Best of Burledge ~ July, 2, 2019

On July 2, 2019 Ray and Rae Nell Halbur & their family sold 69 head from their Burledge herd in “The Best of Burledge”.  The current rolling herd average on this Fond du Lac, Wisconsin herd was at 20,907 3.9% 821 3.2% 660.  The Halbur’s offered a majority of their young cows that were either recently fresh or due prior to fall.  A large crowd of family, friends and prospective bidders were on hand on this balmy summer evening and were treated to ice cream compliments of Burledge.

The high selling cow at $1,800 was a VG Halogen just fresh with her second calf and milking over 100 lbs.  Her VG-86 dam and EX-90 2E granddam had records to 35,150M.  Close behind at $1,725 was Lot 1, Burledge-WB Guthrie Trap VG-88.  This 23,450 4.7 1112 3.3 768 Guthrie sold due later in July to Undenied.  Commanding a final bid of $1,600 was the VG Fever daughter, Burledge Fever Impearl milking 92 lbs. and backed by a VG 29,480 dam.  Included in the sale were a handful of grade Jerseys owned by Ted Halbur.  The high seller amongst this group at $1,350 was a 18,638 5.2 981 3.6 684 @ 1-09 Colton milking 87 lbs. in her second lactation.

2019 National Holstein Convention Sale ~ June, 26, 2019

The 2019 National Holstein Convention Sale certainly lived up to the convention’s theme, Making Legendairy Leaps!  This year’s sale took on a slightly different format with the sale divided into two halves, just like a football game.  The events began at 4:00 p.m. on June 26th at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center, Appleton, WI with a tailgate party featuring a cheese extravaganza highlighting Wisconsin artisan cheeses.

As the large crowd gathered in Exhibit Hall C, Lisa Behnke introduced the Sale Team as well as Singer & Songwriter, Chris Kroeze.   Kroeze performed the Star-Spangled Banner to kick off the first half genomic sale. Featuring 27 high GTPI females and the rights to an IVF flush, the genomic sale kept everyone’s attention with the high demand for these chart-topping opportunities.  Leading off was Lot 1, Terra-Linda Tahiti 10343-ET, the highest NM$ heifer to ever sell at public auction.  When the gavel dropped at $300,000, Progenesis/Semex, Guelph, Ontario became the owner of this +1109NM Tahiti daughter who was consigned by Terra Linda Dairy, Mike Santos, Tulare, CA. 

Lot 2, T-Spruce Crimson 12938-ET +2912G, consigned by T-Spruce Holsteins, Arnie & Kris Gruenes, Richmond, MN commanded a great deal of attention with her A2A2 status combined with high GTPI, +1085NM$ and +1221DWP$.  Peak Genetics, Watertown, WI paid $197,000 to add this #29 NM$ female of the breed to their program. 

Select Sires Inc., Plain City, OH placed the final bid of $135,000 to add the #1 Milktime in the breed for NM$ to their breeding program.   Lambrecht Milktime Amelia-ET +2898G, +1033NM$ +2386M +105F +82P and A2A2 was consigned by Lambrecht Dairy LLC, Jeff Lambrecht, Kewaunee, WI.  

The genomic selection offered was well received with buyers coming from Wisconsin, California, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, Texas, New York, Michigan and Maryland as well as Ontario. 

Halftime dinner was served in Exhibit Hall B with over 700 served a buffet of brats, hamburgers, chicken wings and all the fixings you’d find at the stadium!  Lisa Behnke once again welcomed everyone and introduced the Sale Team.   Chris Kroeze’s performance of God Bless the USA made everyone proud to be an American.

 When the second half kicked off, the live animals paraded across the “football field” stage as they sold.  This portion of the sale featured high type individuals from some of the most prominent, deep pedigreed cow families of the breed.  Claiming high selling honors during the second half was Petitclerc Doorman Sapphire-ET, consigned by Grant Vosters, Freedom, WI.  Sapphire was the winning Jr. 2-Year-Old at the 2019 Midwest Spring National as well as claiming the Grand Champion banner in the junior show.  All something she took in stride after being named Reserve All-American and Junior All-American Spring Yearling in 2018.  The final bid of $24,000 was placed by Siemers Holsteins, Newton, WI.  

The 2017 World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Rosiers Blexy Goldwyn-ET EX-96 2E, provided the next two high sellers both sired by Doorman.   Blexy’s impressive fall yearling, Blexys Doorman Brandy-ET, sold bred to Unix and looked like a major contender for the fall shows.   Consigned by Matt Iager, DVM, Boonsboro, MD, she was selected by Chris & Jen Hill, Tim & Sharyn Abbott and Clark Woodmansee, Thurmont, MD for $15,000.  The silky black winter calf, Ms Blexys Drmn Blythe-ET went to Michael Oliver, Zillah, WA for $12,800.   Blythe was consigned by Woodmansee & Abbott, Preston, CT.  

Golden Oaks Farm, Wauconda, IL chose the +4.22T Avalanche summer yearling consigned by Budjon-Vail, Lomira, WI.   A recent winner at the District 8 show, Lizettes Avalanche Londa-ET is backed by the EX-94 All-Canadian Atwood Lizette then EX-95 Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion, Lotto.

Bidding was active throughout the sales, both by those present, those represented by sale staff and those utilizing the online bidding services of Cowbuyer.com.  Cattle from the live sale were dispersed to buyers from 14 states as well as Canada and Mexico.  A total of 80 lots sold between the genomic and live halves of the sale for an average of $19,481.

Steffensmeier Dairy Milking Herd & Springing Heifer Dispersal ~ June, 7, 2019

June 7, 2019 in Bloomington, Wisconsin was a beautiful summer day.  While many producers were starting first crop hay or finishing soybean planting, those that came to Steffensmeier Dairy to purchase some high quality, high producing cattle had to be pleased with their decision.  The Steffensmeier family offered their 155 head, homebred milking herd and springing heifers for sale at the farm just outside Bloomington. The Registered & grade Holsteins had accumulated 9 years of Supreme Quality Milk Awards at Foremost Farms USA.  Currently the rolling herd average stood at 28,254 3.8% 1065 3.0% 849 on two-time a day milking.

 Cattle sold to buyers from Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa with the high seller at $1,725 being an IHG Montana 2-year-old milking 96 lbs. and backed by a 29,176 Atwood dam.  Selling for $1675 was a just fresh Lawman 4-year-old who made 29,581 last lactation and was backed by 2 dams over 30,000M.  A Red Day daughter with 25,108 @ 2-00 sold just fresh for $1,650.

Weier-Nook Holsteins Milking Herd Dispersal ~ June, 4, 2019

Mark and Sarah Weier and family dispersed their 45 head Weier-Nook milking herd on June 4, 2019 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  Nestled in the rolling hills of Iowa county, this Dodgeville herd was known for good typed, long-lived cows.  The latest classification BAA showed 108.3% while the rolling herd average was 20,158 3.8% 764 3.1% 630. 

Well respected in their farming community, many of the local breeders were on hand to support the sale.  As a matter of fact, the three high sellers found their way back to Southwest Wisconsin!  One of the herd standouts was a Red Axford daughter scored VG-89 EX-MS as a 3-year-old.  She had just completed a 26,520 3.1 823 3.2 838 record and sold due in August to sexed Jordy-Red.  She looked to be a 4th generation Excellent in a pedigree with 6 EX & VG dams. Trent & Kelsey Hendrickson placed the final bid of $4,100 to add her to their Trent-Way herd at Blanchardville, WI.   They also took home a barn favorite, Weier-Nook Gold Chip India VG-85.  This lovely uddered Gold Chip was milking 94 lbs. in her second lactation, backed by 4 VG dams and sold for $3,500.  Julia Searls and Nathan Daniels, Cobb, WI selected Weier-Nook Ladd Rosu-Red VG-86.  This Ladd-P fresh with third calf, milking 110 lbs. and backed by an EX, 29,170 Advent sold for $3,000. 

The Weier-Nook herd averaged $1430 with cattle selling to buyers from southwest, north central and northeast Wisconsin.  The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

The Final Chapter ... Heatherstone Complete Dispersal ~ April, 13, 2019

    It was standing room only at the Heatherstone Complete Dispersal held at the immaculate farmstead just south of Baraboo, Wisconsin on April 13, 2019.  The final chapter of Heatherstone culminated over 60 years of breeding quality Registered Holsteins at this site.  Mike & Valerie Holschbach and their family worked diligently to breed and develop a herd of high type, high component cows with tremendous longevity.  The current rolling herd average was 27,734 4.5% 1234 3.3% 928.  The Heatherstone herd enjoyed much show ring success, most recently being named Premier Exhibitor at the Midwest Fall National in 2018 after receiving Premier Breeder and Exhibitor honors at this show in 2017.  

     A star of the 2018 show string commanded the top price of the day at $19,000. Heatherstone Regal-Red, nominated All-American Red & White Fall Calf in 2018 and carrying a Diamondback heifer calf sold to K-Manor Holsteins, Steve & Janet Keller, Muscoda, WI.  A milking yearling prospect for 2019, this Avalanche is backed by the 2-time All-American nominee, Heatherstone Rhinestone-Red EX-94 2E, with 34,760 4.9 1702 3.2 1111 at 3-07.   Rhinestone sold due in June with an Unstopabull heifer calf to Chelsea Holschbach, Baraboo, WI for $13,500. 

     One of the breed’s newest 95-point cows, Arethusa Wind Avocado-ET EX-95 2E, sold for $9,900.  Avocado has a top record of 42,460 4.0 1683 3.0 1266 and was named Reserve Grand Champion at the 2017 District 5 Show.   Hailing from the Tri-Day Ashlyn family, Avocado was purchased by Alex Stoddard, Gray Court, SC.   Hilltop Dairy LLC, Markesan, WI paid $7,000 for Avocado’s fancy fall calf by King Doc.

     An exciting winter yearling prospect for the 2019 show sold for $9,000 to Arnie Gruenes, Richmond, MN.   Bred to King Doc, Heatherstone Glitter is a Doorman from the 2014 Reserve All-American Milking Yearling, Savage-Leigh Golden Girl-ET EX-92. The next dam, Savage-Leigh Leona-ET EX-96 2E GMD is also a Reserve All-American. This cow family provided the next high seller at $8,900 as well.   Heatherstone Good Time-ET was purchased by Jason & Sheri Danhof, Waukon, IA.  This fancy Undenied winter calf is +4.21T +0.4PL and +.6DPR.  Her dam is a just fresh Avalanche from the EX-92 Golden Girl.  

     Oh-River-Syc Byway-ET had several impressive daughters in the herd with the Sr. 2-Year-Old for 2019, Heatherstone Msindependent, capturing the attention of many.   She sold for $7,400 to Dalton Hahn, Loganville, WI.   Her dam was a 2-time winner in heifer form and is currently scored VG-87 with the next 3 dams Excellent.  Cattle sold to buyers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, California, Missouri, Washington, South Carolina and Pennsylvania with the 210 lots averaging $2,228.

886th Great Northern Sale ~ April, 2, 2019

Prices on the top cows reached higher, but the April Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern was not quite as consistent as seen in previous sales.   The April 2, 2019 sale offered a fine uddered group of first and second lactation fresh cows.  

The top price of $2,800 came on a 29,330 Mogul milking 139 lbs. in her second lactation. Selling for $2,200 was a Sterling 2-year-old just fresh with 103 lbs. on her second test.   Her GP-83 dam has 3 records over 36,000M and the next 4 dams are all EX or VG. A Paradise daughter milking 139 lbs. after making 28,110 at 1-10 sold for $2,100 while a 29,170 at 1-10 Mogul commanded $2,000 and was averaging 131 lbs. a day.

Bumble B Dairy Milking Herd & Springing Heifer Dispersal ~ March, 22, 2019

     Bumble B Dairy Inc. dispersed their high producing milking herd along with all close springing heifers at the farm in Cuba City, Wisconsin on March 22, 2019.  The 300+ cow milking herd boasted a rolling herd average of 3x 28,251 3.7% 1037 3.0% 859 with the SCC bulk tank average at 150.   62 years of breeding had resulted in a well-balanced herd with exceptional udders and outstanding feet and legs.   The herd was mated by East Central/Select Sires utilizing the best combination of high type, high production sires available.  

     A nice crowd was on hand to add some good young cows from the 326 head offering to their herds.   The top price for the day was $1,825 which came on 3 different lots:   a Bradnick 3-year-old milking 134 lbs. after making 30,339 at 2-00; a Mogul with 28,641 at 2-00 and due in June to Hardrock; and a Mogul 2-year-old milking 123 lbs. and bred back to Modesty.  Selling for $1,800 was a Dempsey 2-year-old milking 88 lbs. from a 41,370 dam.  The springing heifers sold in the $1275 - $1625 range with the high heifer a Mogul springing to McCutchen.   Her dam with 29,740 at 2-11.

884th Great Northern Sale ~ March, 19, 2019

Prices were very steady throughout the sale on March 19, 2019 at the March Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern.  A nice crowd was on hand and appreciated the superb uddered group of cows offered including the Milking Herd Dispersal of Kevin & Carol Schafer, Lake City, MN.  

Two different cows claimed high selling honors at $2,500.   Both sired by Kingboy, one milking 120 lbs. after making 25,966 at 1-11, the other milking over 125 lbs. after making 23,564 at 1-10.   Selling for $2,150 was an Atlantic daughter from the Schafer herd.  This GP-82 3-year-old was milking 112 lbs. after making 21,785 4.2 914 3.3 713 at 2-02.  Her GP 19,150 dam is backed by 7 generations EX and VG.

A nice group of Registered springing heifers were offered in the sale averaging $1,475.  The high selling heifer at $1,600 was a Red Armani due to sexed Tatoo. Her VG dam with 25,040M.

Quest for Success IV ~ March, 9, 2019

     A huge crowd filled the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on March 9, 2019 for the fourth edition of the Quest for Success sale.  An awesome line up of high type Holsteins and Jerseys awaited the review of prospective buyers.  At day’s end the 86 Holstein lots averaged $4,040 while the entire group of 101 Holstein and Jersey lots averaged $3,825.   Cattle were dispersed to buyers from Arizona, California, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut as well as the Canadian provinces of Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta. 

     Topping the sale at $20,000 was the consignment of Hilrose Dairy LLC, Sherwood, WI.  Hilrose Avalnch Addy-Red-ET is a +4.07T fall calf by Avalanche from the 2018 Wisconsin Cow of the Year, Hilrose Advent Anna-Red-ET EX-94 2E GMD. This 10th generation Excellent was also named the Nasco International Type & Production Winner at World Dairy Expo in 2018 and is a 2-time Reserve All-American Red & White.  Bidding was spirited but when the gavel fell, Milk Source Genetics, Legendholm Holsteins and Grant Vosters, Kaukauna, WI had placed the final bid. 

     Jacob, Logan & Madison Harbaugh and Adella & Ainsley Loehr offered the choice of Bella-Ridge Beauty Queen, All-Wisconsin Spring Yearling 2018 or Crowleyview Doorman Luxi, Reserve All-Wisconsin Summer Yearling 2018.   Luxi Partners, Eden, WI paid $15,000 to claim Doorman Luxi, the Doorman bred to Avalanche from an EX-92 Guthrie from an EX sister to 2013 All-American 5-Year-Old, Rosedale Lexington EX-95.

    A stunning Avalanche spring yearling from the EX-95 2E 1* Kingsway Goldwyn Abba Dabba-ET sold for $12,500 to Oakfield Corners Dairy Show Account, Oakfield, NY.   The consignment of John Cannon, Dyersville, IA, Ms Abba Amazing 2319-ET *RC is bred to be a good one.   Selling for $11,500 was Scenic-Edge Jordan-Red, the consignment of Rodney Bohnhoff, Plymouth, WI.   This stylish Jordy summer yearling from the Jena family which has produced a long list of All-American nominees and Excellent daughters sold to Ty, Jacey & Hadley Ross of Arizona Dairy, Mesa, AZ.

     Arnie Jr., Ashley & Andy Gruenes, Richmond, MN paid $10,700 to take home a Jordy sister to the 2018 World Dairy Expo Junior Show Supreme Champion.  This impressive winter calf, Kress-Hill Sunrise-Red-ET, consigned by Owen & Kendyll Kress and Savanah Barts, Newton, WI is backed by an EX-93 Destry who is a 6 time Junior All-American Red & White nominee. The first-choice Avalanche from the 2018 Unanimous All-American Red & White Sr. 2-Year-Old, Siemers Awesome Great-Red VG-89 EX-MS, sold for $10,000 to Jorgensen, Ryan, Harbaugh & Vande Zande, Waupun, WI.   This choice was offered by Siemers Holstein Farm, Inc., Newton, WI.

     Noah Bilz, Dorchester, WI purchased the high selling Jersey at $5,700.   Consigned by Pure Pride Holsteins & Jerseys, Menomonie, WI, Townside Norman Kookie was 1st winter calf at the 2018 Wisconsin Junior State Fair and stood 8th in a strong class at World Dairy Expo.  Kookie looked to be a force in the 2019 shows.

882nd Great Northern ~ February, 12, 2019

Despite the biggest snow storm of the season, an enthusiastic crowd forged their way to the Great Northern Sales Arena on February 12, 2019 for the February Dairy Production Sale.   The buyers appreciated the young, good uddered cows offered that were milking heavily with high components and low somatic cell count. At day’s end the group averaged right at $1,550. 

The high selling cow at $1,950 was a Yoder fresh with 2nd calf and milking 125 lbs. 5.1%f 3.2%p on her January test.   At 1-11 this lovely uddered cow made 24,670 4.6 1124 3.4 836.  Close behind at $1,900 was a 2 yr old Slade milking 72 lbs. 4.8% 3.5% and serviced to Bluff.  Her 24,060 5.3 1267 dam was followed by 3 dams over 30,000M.   Selling for $1,850 was a stylish Gold Chip daughter just fresh in her second lactation and milking 126 lbs. on her first test.   A potential Excellent, she made 23,611 @ 1-10 and was backed by a 25,972 @ 1-11 dam. Commanding a final bid of $1,800 was a 25,980 @ 1-10 Grafeeti milking 116 lbs. on her last test.

An impressive group of 5 registered springing heifers sold.  The prices on these heifers were consistent at $1,400 with a fancy Diamondback due to Tatoo and backed by 7 EX & VG dams selling for $1,450.

881st Great Northern ~ January, 15, 2019

With the New Year came new interest and a slight uptick in prices at the January Production Sale on January 15th at Great Northern.  A high producing group of first and second lactation cows sold.  This good uddered group averaged right at $1,500.

The top price of $2,650 came on a promising 3-year-old milking 105 lbs. last test and backed by an EX-92 42,640 Goldwyn from the EX-96 4E “Apple”.  A lovely uddered Mogul 2-year-old milking 75 lbs. and bred to Kingboy and a 28,380 4.3 1207 Mogul milking 131 ls. In her second lactation each sold for $2,000.  Selling for $1,925 was a Kingboy 2-year-old milking 99 lbs.  The only springing heifer offered was a grade Damaris that sold for $900.    Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

Holiday Sale ~ December, 18, 2018

On a December 18th a nice crowd gathered at the Great Northern Sales Arena for the Holiday Sale.  Quite possibly the first time in 37 years that mother nature cooperated for the Holiday Sale as it was a beautiful December day!  Spirits were good, and the bidding was active considering the current market conditions. 

Claiming the top price for the day was an impressive red Diamondback bred heifer.  This Sr. 2-year-old prospect for 2019 sold due late January to sexed Undenied.  Her EX-91 EX-MS Advent dam has records to 31,130 and is a granddaughter of the 3 time All-American, Greenlea Rub Marlene-Red EX-94 3E.  This potential ninth generation EX or VG was consigned by Adylin Dieter and Alek Krueger, Edgerton, WI and sold for $2,300 to Thomas Oppriecht, Eastman, WI. 

The high selling cow at $2,025 was consigned by Dueppengiesser Dairy, Perry, NY.  This VG-87 Doorman milking 93 lbs. in her second lactation and serviced to Tatoo was an All-Canadian nominee in heifer form and certainly needed to see the classifier.  This potential fourth generation EX was purchased by Paul Knier, Oshkosh, WI.  Close behind at $2,000 was the Pety daughter consigned by Wargo Acres, Lodi, WI.  Just classified GP-83 VG-MS, she sold milking 124 lbs. in her second lactation after making 31,360 at 2-00.  Her dam and granddam both VG-87 and over 45,000M.  Country Aire Farms LLC, Greenleaf, WI placed the final bid to add her to their high producing herd.

A select, high-quality group of deep pedigreed show age heifers complimented the exceptional group of fresh cows offered in the sale.  The top price of $1,600 was achieved on 2 of these heifers:  a big, deep ribbed Undenied spring yearling from an EX-94 34,570 Durham and a fancy Slater summer yearling from an EX-94 31,290 Atwood.   Both heifers were consigned by Oakfield Corners Dairy, Oakfield, NY.

879th Great Northern ~ December, 4, 2018

The struggling dairy economy was very apparent on December 4, 2018 at the Great Northern December Dairy Production Sale.  Very reasonable prices on good uddered young cows was the theme for the day. However, those that made purchases should be extremely happy with the cows they added to their herds as they were an outstanding group that were in full flow of milk. 

The high selling cow for the day was a Mogul with 25,720 4.2 1075 3.2 819 @ 1-10.  Fresh with second calf, she sold milking 113 lbs. and commanded a final bid of $1,950.  Another second lactation cow sold for $1,700.  This Regancrest Paradise daughter made 23,610 4.1 965 2.9 685 @ 1-10 and was milking over 100 lbs. a day currently.   Also selling for $1,700 was an Atwood 2-year-old just fresh with 93 lbs. first test.  Her dam is an EX-94 GMD Hero with 39,060 4.3 1687.

Day-Brem Milking Herd Dispersal ~ November, 28, 2018

The Day-Brem Milking Herd of David and Kay Blank, Ixonia, WI was dispersed on November 28, 2018 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  The herd had a current rolling herd average of 19,956 4.0% 796 3.1% 622 with an SCC average of 65.  David had decided it was time to retire from milking and take life a little easier after many years devoted to breeding a good uddered herd that provided for his family while spending a great deal of time on pasture supplemented with a ration of homegrown grains and forages. 

Sharing the honors as high sellers were Day-Brem Durable Commotion and Day-Brem Alexander Kezzie.  Each sold for $1,750.  Durable Commotion was a herd favorite with 20,710 in her first lactation and sold springing to a March 10th breeding to Melarry Jedi Foul-ET.  Alexander Kezzie had completed records to 27,752 and sold springing to the service of Kingboy.  An end stall cow, Day-Brem Guthrie Quizz-Tw claimed the next high price of $1,700.  This impressive Guthrie 4-year-old sold fresh in August and serviced to Claynook Folklore.  Backed by two VG-87 dams, this stylish cow went on to classify Excellent a couple weeks later for her new owners!

877th Great Northern Sale ~ November, 14, 2018

Good interest from buyers and an outstanding group of young fresh cows led to a steady day on November 14, 2018 at the November Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern.  Prices were steady at the $1500 level with a top price of $2,050.  The sale topper was a red Pat daughter who made 22,820 4.3 982 3.4 779 at 1-10 and sold fresh just 2 weeks and milking 95 lbs.  A lovely uddered cow classified GP-80 in her first lactation, she is backed by a GP-83 25,920 Jabir then 7 EX dams. A grade daughter of De-Su Gulf with 27,163 4.3 1166 3.2 864 at 1-11 sold for $1,900.  This impressive uddered cow sold milking 117 lbs. last test.  A potential VG Doorman 3 yr old milking 124 lbs. sold for $1,800.  Backed by 6 EX & VG dams all over 1000F, this tall, well balanced cow made 28,540 at 1-11.   The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

Halloween Harvest Sale ~ October, 29, 2018

     A beautiful uddered group of young cows along with an impressive group of springing heifers and two fancy show age heifers awaited potential buyers on October 29, 2018 at the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac.  The Halloween Harvest Sale was sponsored by the Wisconsin Holstein Association with Bryan Stremcha serving as sale committee chairman. 

     Sharing honors at the top of the buyer’s list were Black-Rock Doorman Deb 001 VG-88 and Sun-Made Larions Crush-ET.   Both sold for $3,000.   Black-Rock Doorman Deb 001 was consigned by Alek Krueger, Hazel Green, WI and purchased by Justin Giese, Edgar, WI.   This Doorman Junior 3-Year-Old was named Reserve Junior All-American Summer Yearling in 2016 and looks to complete 4 generations Excellent in the very near future.  Sun-Made Larions Crush-ET was consigned by Dr. Chris Keim, Fort Atkinson, WI and sold to Liberty Genetics, Kemptville, Ontario.  This fancy March 2018 heifer sired by Crush is from the Reserve All-Wisconsin 5 Year Old 2018, Comestar Larion Goldwyn-ET EX-94 who hails from the famed Lili Starbuck family at Lylehaven.  

    Another cow with many admirers was Tree-Hayven Atwood Autumn consigned by Austen Schmidt and Brandon Ferry, Cascade, WI.   Recently raised to VG-89 with an EX-91 mammary at less than a month fresh, this well-balanced Atwood is sure to add more points and sold milking 142 lbs.   The final bid of $2,650 was placed by Chris Weiland, Spencer, WI.   Selling for $2,625 was the consignment of Henk & Bonnie Van Dyk, New Richmond, WI.   Willows-Edge Gold Java-ET VG-86 sold to Jim Brown, Hastings, MN.   This Goldsun 3-year-old sold milking 106 lbs. and backed by the EX-93 Grand Champion from the 2013 Midwest Fall National Junior Show.  Martin Kinyon, Lone Rock, WI paid $2,600 for Our-Favorite Zealous-ET VG-86.  This McGucci 3 year old from the type expert, Our-Favorite Unlimited EX-94 2E, sold milking 100 lbs.  with all the makings of a sixth generation Excellent. The high selling bred heifer at $2,400 was consigned by the Booth Family, Plymouth, WI. Booth-Haven Lyric-Red-ET is a Denote daughter from 5 Excellent dams and sold due in December with a Jordy heifer calf.  Adam Voigts added her to his Platteville, Wisconsin herd.  

     At day’s end the 59 live lots averaged $1,832 with buyers coming from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Ontario.   Darrell Worden sold the sale with Kevin Jorgensen providing pedigree highlights.   Ringmen included Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Lynn Harbaugh, Don Mayer, Bryan Stremcha, Chad Ryan and Ron Roskopf.   Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. handled the clerking duties.

     Mark and Lana Navis dispersed their homebred grade Holstein herd on October 24, 2018 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  The current rolling herd average on this Waupun, Wisconsin herd was 24,630 3.7% 903 3.1% 767 with the most recent SCC average at 139.  A total of 148 head sold with the top price of $2,000 coming on a 3-year-old milking 103 lbs. and serviced to Montross after making 23,658 @ 2-00.  A 2-year-old Montagu daughter milking 75 lbs. and recently serviced to Montross sold for $1,900.  Selling for $1,800 were a fresh 2nd lactation cow milking 95 lbs. after making 24,114 @ 2-00 and a 23,096 producer milking 106 lbs. in her 2nd lactation.  Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale with Darrell Worden selling the sale and Kevin Jorgensen providing catalog updates.   Working the ring were Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Keith Kastein and Ron Roskopf. 

Krohlow Registered Holsteins & Jerseys Complete Dispersal ~ October, 19, 2018

     It was a cold, rainy, windy day on October 19, 2018 at the Krohlow Complete Dispersal but the bidding was lively with bids coming from the crowd, on the phone and online.  Craig and Marlene Krohlow dispersed their high type Holstein and Jersey herd at their well-maintained Black Creek, Wisconsin farmstead.  The Holstein herd currently boasted a classification BAA of 113%, among the highest in the nation.  Since 1980 the Krohlows have bred 107 Excellents and most recently were named Premier Breeder and Exhibitor at the District 7 Holstein show.  The small, but mighty, Jersey group within the herd boasted the Wisconsin Jersey Futurity winner in 2018 and the Grand Champion from the High Protein Show in both 2017 & 2018.

      The 2018 Wisconsin Jersey Futurity winner commanded the top price of the day at $11,000.  Krohlow Comerica Anna VG-89 sold due back to Choice for the 2019 shows.  Having claimed the Supreme Champion honors at the 2017 High Protein Show, Anna was the choice of John Vosters & Jim Ostrum, Kaukauna, WI. Among the group of sensational heifers, a crowd favorite was the red and white Absolute daughter, Craig-Kro Abslute Tiffy-Red.   This late July summer yearling sold serviced to Diamondback and backed by the Excellent-92 Ladd P daughter of All-American and All-Canadian, Silvermine Adv Tally-Red-ET EX-93 2E.  The final bid of $7,050 for this promising young heifer came from Verlo DeWall, Shannon, IL.  Her dam is also re-locating to Illinois but in the herd of Olivia Schluter of Red Bud. The Schluter’s paid $5,200 for Milksource Lad Taffy-Red-ET who is certain to add more points and is a spitting image of her exceptional brood cow dam, Tally-Red. A member of the Krohlow’s winning best three females from the District 7 show commanded the next high price of $4,000.   Craig-Kro Brokaw Alsa EX-91 EX-MS sold to Todd Clark, Wilton, WI via Cowbuyer.com.   

     Chris Hill and Kevin Jorgensen kept the sale moving from their positions in the auction box while Rick Bovre, Lynn Harbaugh and Ron Roskopf fielded bids from the crowd.  Kaleb Kruse represented those bidding online. The cattle were presented in the ring by Savannah Micke, Jen Krull, Andy Steinhagen and Brandon Ferry.   The excellent presentation of the herd was handled by Ryan and Travis Krohlow along with Cody Schultz, Brandon Smith, Wyatt Lee, Kyle Knaup and Tyler Carter.    Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale. 

 

Stelsel Family Farm Complete Dispersal ~ October, 12, 2018

After 43 years of breeding, Dan and Sue Stelsel dispersed their 180 head homebred herd at their farm in Waupun, Wisconsin on a chilly October 12, 2018.  The Stelsel herd had a rolling herd average of 24,150 3.7% 901 3.1% 742 with an SCC average of 154.  The herd had been mated by East Central/Select Sires and featured a solid line-up of good uddered cows and well-grown, straight lined heifers by some of the breed’s most popular sires.  

A nice crowd was on hand and appreciated the many years of Dan and his family’s labor and care of the herd.   The 88 cows and bred heifers sold for an average of $1,619. The high selling cow was an impressive VG-86 McCutchen springing to King Doc with a heifer calf.   This AAA cow made 26,560 3.8 1017 3.3 868 at 2-02 and sold for $4,500.  The high selling bred heifer was also sired by McCutchen and sold for $3,100.  She too sold due with a King Doc heifer calf.

Fond du Lac County Holstein Classic ~ September, 25, 2018

The 73rd Edition of the Fond du Lac County Holstein Classic was held on September 25, 2018 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  A beautiful uddered line-up of young cows filled the barn and were appreciated by the potential buyers as were the select group of springing heifers that looked very promising. 

The high selling cow for the evening was consigned by Hilrose Dairy LLC, Sherwood, WI.   This GP-84 Blondin Integral daughter with 25,520 4.4 1122 3.6 908 at 2-01 sold fresh, milking 124 lbs. and looking to pick up several points.  Backed by 3 dams over 40,000M, this potential 6th generation EX or VG sold to John Krueger, Hilbert, WI.   John also added the big, lovely uddered Beemer daughter consigned by Mystic Valley Dairy LLC and Kevin Jorgensen, Sauk City, WI.  Hailing from 4 generations Excellent in the Ashlyn family, Jenny-Lou-KJ Bmr Addie-ET had 115 lbs. on her first test after making 23,760 at 1-09.   She’s another cow that needs to see the classifier and should take a big jump in score. She sold for $2,700. 

The high seller bred heifer at $2,100 was consigned by Mike & Megan Moede, Algoma, WI.   This Doorman sold due in December with a Tatoo heifer calf.  Her EX-94 Talent dam has 47,050 4.2 1980, the next dam Savage-Leigh Licorice-ET EX-92 GMD DOM and HHM All-American.    Entourage-LC Dmn Lullaby-ET was the selection of Austin McCulley, Reedsville, WI.

Lost Elm Fall Celebration ~ September, 11, 2018

On a beautiful September day, Jersey enthusiasts gathered at the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac, WI for the Lost-Elm Fall Celebration.  The bidding was active in the crowd, on the phone and online via Cowbuyer as the 94 whole lots and 13 heifer calves were appreciated by buyers from coast to coast.   Jason Luttropp, Lost-Elm Jerseys, offered a cross section from his high type herd ranging from newborn heifer calves to Excellent cows.  At days end the entire group of 44 cows and 64 heifers averaged $1,557 with the cows averaging $1,789.   Cattle sold to buyers from NH, PA, MD, MI, IL, WI, IA, MN and CA.

Commanding the highest price of the day was the Dimension heifer springing to sexed Tbone.  Her dam is the EX-90 Impact daughter, K&K Impact Olga, that was 1st for Milk, Protein & Cheese Yield in the Jersey breed for 2017.  Her impressive record at 5-00 365d 52,080 3.8 1964 3.4 1788.  When the dust settled, the successful bidder at $9,000 was Vierra Dairy, Hilmar, CA.

The winning Junior two year old at the 2018 Midwest National Spring Show claimed the second high price at $5,300.   This VG-86 Topeka daughter is bred back to Barnabas for 2019 and sold to James Janes, Berlin, WI.  Another exceptional Senior two year old by Colton sold for $4,900 to Kris Garbrecht & Jim Klimpke, Oconto Falls, WI.  A potential sixth generation Excellent, this lovely uddered young cow sold bred to Fizz. 

Another young cow receiving a great deal of attention was the Comerica milking yearling just fresh with a Tequila heifer calf.   Lost-Elm Comerica Fifi is backed by a VG-86 Applejack and sold to Joe & Colleen Neperman, Junction City, WI for $3,500.

870th Great Northern Sale ~ August, 14, 2018

The market was steady with a slight uptick on August 14th at the August Dairy Production Sale.  The high cow for the evening was a 26,840 4.2 1137 2.9 789 Gold Chip fresh with 2nd calf and milking over 110 lbs. a day.  Backed by a 40,190 dam, this high-quality young cow looked to move into the VG category easily.  Her herdmate by McNuggets commanded a final bid of $2,350.  This well balanced 3-year-old was milking over 100 lbs. after making 35,000 @ 1-11.  A majority of the fresh first and second lactation cows selling that evening were in the $1400 - $1600 range.  A group of springing heifers sold from one herd.  All A.I. sired and bred with solid production on their dams.  These heifers sold in the $1100 - $1150 range.

869th Great Northern Sale ~ July, 10, 2018

The July Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern was held July 10th.  Buyer interest was improved, and prices were relatively steady throughout the sale although everyone would like to see the prices moving upward.   The high selling cow at $2,550 was a 25,625 Boliver Enid fresh with 106 lbs. SCC 52.  A Malone daughter with 23,182 @ 1-11 sold for $2,400.  She was milking 134 lbs. on her July test.  Selling for $2,200 was a Gold Chip milking over 100 lbs. after making 30,010 @ 1-11.

868th Great Northern Sale ~ June, 5, 2018

Unfortunately, the negativity in the dairy industry is having a negative affect on cow prices as well.  On June 5th the June Dairy Production Sale was held at Great Northern.  The high selling cow for the evening at $2,100 was a 26,780 4.3 1143 @ 1-10 Guthrie fresh and milking 98 lbs. first test.   Selling for $2,000 was a Deceiver 2 yr old backed by 5 EX dams and milking over 75 lbs.  

867th Great Northern Sale ~ May, 23, 2018

As the milk prices trend downward, so have the cattle prices.  The May Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern was held May 23rd.  Overall prices trended lower, but we still had a high price of $2,700 on 3 different cows.  Achieving the $2700 mark were:  a Mystic 2 yr old milking 95 lbs; a 29,050 McCutchen fresh with her second calf and milking 145 lbs. and a McNuggets with 29,670 @ 1-11 and fresh with 143 lbs.  The top price on springing heifers was $1,275 which came on two different heifers – both A.I. bred and due in early June.    

865th Great Northern Sale ~ April, 17, 2018

Interest ran high and the bidding was active at the April Dairy Production Sale at the Great Northern Sales Arena on April 17, 2018.  The group of first and second lactation cows offered in the sale were an extremely milky group that looked good pumping out lots of high quality milk.

Topping the sale was an Aftershock recently scored Excellent-90 and looking like she’ll pick up more points in the future.   Milking 110 lbs. and backed by two VG-88 dams, she sold for $3,050.  Close behind at $2,900 was a VG-85 Moregold daughter who made 23,390 4.3 1003 3.1 736 at 2-00. She was milking 113 lbs., backed by a 37,690 dam and looked the part to move up significantly in score.   Three cows claimed that third high price of $2,700:  a 27,890 at 1-10 McNuggets milking 140 lbs. from a beautiful udder; a 27,660 4.3 1182 at 1-10 Damaris milking 115 lbs. and backed by 6 EX & VG dams and a Doorman 2 yr old milking 100 lbs. from 3 generations over 30,000M.   Only a handful of springing heifers sold in the sale with the top price of $1,950 coming on a red and white heifer due to Ducati and backed by a 35,660 dam.

Spring Selections at the Northern ~ April, 6, 2018

When one hears the date April 6th, thoughts of spring and warmer temperatures usually come to mind.  However, April 6, 2018 certainly did not live up to expectations in the weather department, with frigid temperatures and blowing snow causing white-out conditions in some areas.  But the enthusiasm for a tremendous line-up of cattle at the Spring Selections at the Northern was evident as a large crowd made their way to the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac, WI to participate in the sale.Touted as an offering of value-added Holsteins and Jerseys, the offering certainly did not disappoint and offered something for everyone. At day’s end the 108 whole lots averaged $3,566. 

An added lot from Colganados Genetics LLC and Carlos Felipe, Chicago, IL garnered many admirers and provided the sale’s high seller at $18,200.  Colganados D Avianca-Red-ET EX-92 sold just fresh and looking the part to be a major contender in the 5 year old class.  Sired by Destry from the Apple clone, Apple A1 “VG-87”, Avianca was purchased by Jonathan and Alicia Lamb, Oakfield, NY with Martin Kinyon, Lone Rock, WI contending. Selling for $10,000 was the Jersey consignment of Zach, Blake and Mitch Schulte, Blairstown, Iowa. Schulte Bros Teq Dora-ET is a Tequila summer yearling from the EX-93 Iatola, Dare to Dream, who is a show winning granddaughter of World Champion Veronica EX-97 5E.  When the gavel fell, Jared Dickman, Lanark, IL had placed the final bid and is certain to have an exciting time in the show ring this year!

Another exceptional show ring prospect was consigned by Quietcove Hoslteins and Austin Trbovich, Wapakoneta, OH.  Miss Lexys Lucky Lady-ET is a pretty Doorman winter calf that is certain to get much attention and show ring exposure from her new owners, Brianne, Brooklyn & Reid Vandoske, Cleveland, WI.  The Vandoskes paid $9,300 for this granddaughter of the EX-95 All-American Rosedale Lexington-ET who is also making her mark as a tremendous brood cow.  Several daughters of KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET EX-96 4E 19* DOM were offered in the sale by Apple Partners LLC, Lanark, IL.  Claiming the top price of $8,500 was a silky black Solomon summer yearling who will join a couple of her older sisters that have been very influential at Golden Oaks Farm, Wauconda, IL. Another extremely stylish, well balanced summer yearling sold for $8,100 to Kaylie Zapalac and Hayden Haedge, Hico, TX.  From the eighth generation Excellent, RJR Sid 3273-ET EX-92 who was Junior All-American Milking Yearling in 2014, this Diamondback daughter was consigned by Norman Nabholz, West Union, IA.  

Cattle sold coast to coast with buyers coming from Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Texas, Oklahoma and California as well as Ontario and British Colombia. Norman Nabholz, John Erbsen, Rick Bovre and Kevin Jorgensen were responsible for selecting the outsanding group of cattle offered in the sale.   The sale staff included Chris Hill and Kevin Jorgensen in the box with Lynn Harbaugh, Tom DeGroot, Brandon Ferry, Bob Sabo, Ron Roskopf, Perry Phend and Michael Heath working the ring and handling phone bids.  Online bidding was available via Cowbuyer.com represented by Kaleb & Cole Kruse. Presenting the cattle in the ring were Eric Reisinger, Rachel McCullough and Mary & Naomi Scott.   The crew responsible for having the cattle in show ring ready condition were Garrett Schmidt, Aaron Lien, Tyler Endres, Shawon Vande Zande, Dawson Nickels, Brock Kasten, Jared Buske, David Petersheim, Mikayla Endres, Kylie Nickels, Theresa Bock and Alexa Albrecht.   Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

Pursuit of Excellence ~ March, 24, 2018

A large crowd was on hand March 24th at the Great Northern Sales Arena for the Pursuit of Excellence which featured 108 lots from long time breeders from Wisconsin and the Northeast that share a great deal of passion and dedication to the Registered Holstein cow.  This Breeders’ Event was presented by Ridgedale Farm, Ryan-Vu Holsteins, Glenn-Ann Holsteins, Jeffrey-Way Holsteins, Plum Line Holsteins, Liddleholme and Ovaltop Holsteins.  

A standout in the heifer row was Ryan-Mvloo Solo Response-ET.  This fall calf by Solomon hails from the same branch of the Roxy family as the high type Solomon son, Blondin Raptor +4.46 PTAT. Backed by an EX-93 Reginald who had claimed All-Wisconsin honors, Response was consigned by Ryan-Vu and partners Majestic View LLC and Crailoo Dairy.  Claire Betley, Pulaski, WI placed the final bid of $8,000 to add this impressive heifer to her show string for 2018. 

The first live offering from the breed’s newest 96 point cow attracted a great deal of attention.   The October, 2017 Diamondback from 2017 Reserve All-American Aged Cow, Liddleholme Resur Lu-Red-ET EX-96 3E was a clean cut, deep ribbed heifer with loads of style.  Rachel Coyne and Sierra Swanson, Hutchinson, MN paid $7,000 for Liddleholme Diamond Lust-ET *RC consigned by Cyrus Conard and Richard Witter. 

Another attention getter was the Red Defiant fall calf from Cyrus Conard.   Ridgedale Reputation-Red-ET is a beautifully cut daughter of the 5 time All-American Red & White nominee, Ridgedale-T Raichu-Red EX-96 4E.  Reputation is headed to California as Donovan Miguel from Hilmar paid $6,900 to claim this potential 9th generation Excellent.  

A silky, black, mid-April spring yearling by King Bailey *RC continually caught the eye of sale spectators.   This consignment from Liddleholme is a daughter of Ms Doorman Lysette-ET *RC VG-86, a favorite among the young cows at Liddlehome and a sister to the popular Jacot-Red.  Hailing from the Licorice family and a potential 14th generation Excellent or Very Good, Liddleholme Lotto-ET *RC was chosen by the Avant Garde Group, Dundas, Ontario for $6,000. 

High selling cow at $5,200 was Hobby-Acres Rosanne-ET EX-90 EX-MS consigned by Cyrus Conard.  This 8th generation Excellent Brokaw from the Roxy family was named HM All-New York Senior 2 Year Old in 2017 and is due back in August with a Diamondback heifer calf. Kathy Nieman placed the final bid to take her home to Monroe, WI. 

The cattle were expertly prepared by Jared Buske, Patrick Carey, Cyrus Conard, Tyler Endres, Travis Krohlow, Dawson Nickels, Brock Liddle, Cody Schultz and Shawon Vande Zande.  Presenting the cattle in the ring were Brandon Ferry, Brooks Hendrickson, Riley Miller, Rachel Coyne, Paige Nelson, Hailee Liddle and Taylor Behnke.  

Cattle sold to buyers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky, California, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Texas as well as Ontario and Alberta.  At day’s end the sale averaged $2210 on over 100 head.

862nd Great Northern Sale ~ March, 13, 2018

The March Dairy Production Sale was held at the Great Northern Sales Arena on March 13, 2018.  As seems to be the case across the country, the prices for replacement breeding stock is following the trend of the milk market.   The bidding was consistent and steady throughout the sale with buyers being able to add good uddered young cows to their herds that will add large volumes of high quality milk to their tank!

The top price of $2,400 came on a fancy uddered Comestar Lineman 2 yr old milking 80 lbs. and backed by a 35,300 dam.   The selling price of $2,200 was claimed by 3 other cows:   a Twist daughter with 24,564 4.0 968 3.1 767 @ 1-09 and fresh at 2-09 with 114 lbs.; a Mogul 2 yr old milking 90 lbs. 4.3%f SCC 35 and backed by a 26,420 4.3 1127 3.0 787 dam; plus a Halogen 3 yr old milking 123 lbs. SCC 13 after making 23,611 @ 1-10. 

The barn was filled with first and second lactation cows, both Registered and grade that averaged right at $1,700.   Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

861st Great Northern Sale ~ February, 13, 2018

Interest in the February Dairy Production Sale ran high.  The group of first and second lactation cows selling had phenomenal udders and were really milking.  The kind of cows any dairyman can appreciate.  A nice crowd assembled at the Great Northern Sales Arena on February 13, 2018 with several potential buyers keeping the bidding active and fast paced.

Topping the sale at $2,700 was an impressive Armani fresh with second calf and milking 105 lbs.   Classified Good Plus-81 as a 2 yr old, she certainly needed to see the classifier!   At 1-11 she made 23,100 4.4 1027 3.3 758 and is backed by two dams over 29,000M.   A red & white Absolute daughter ready to calve to the service of Jacot and carrying a heifer calf brought $2,550.  At 2-02 she had made 22,045 3.9 866 3.0 668.   Also selling for $2,550 was a silky Impression daughter.  At 1-11 she made 26,138 4.3 1119 3.5 911 and was fresh with 113 lbs. on her first test.  Close behind at $2,500 was an Altaelliot daughter who made 33,473 4.5 1501 3.1 1053 at 2-00 and was fresh with 112 lbs. first test.

859th Great Northern Sale ~ January, 16, 2018

As we begin 2018, the cow prices are trending with milk prices quite closely.  At the January Dairy Production Sale on January 16, 2018 we had a nice group of 45 fresh cows and 17 springing heifers.

The top price of the day was $2,200 which came on two different cows:  A Shot Al with 23,900 @ 1-10 sold fresh with 136 lbs. SCC 14 and backed by an VG-86 37,470 dam and EX 27,370 granddam and another Shot Al milking 98 lbs. just fresh at 1-10 from two dams over 33,000M.  Selling for $2,150 was a Padget 2 yr. old milking 98 lbs. and backed by 29,340 and 35,600 dams. 

The springing heifers were well grown and had beautiful udders coming.  They all sold due within the next 30 days.  Unfortunately, buyers were not as appreciative of them.  The high price in this group was $1,250.  The top price came on two different heifers:  a Montney springing to Midgard and a Mesmer due to sexed Butler.

Great Northern Holiday Sale ~ December, 19, 2017

A barn full of lovely uddered young cows, a select group of big, promising bred heifers and an elite group of deep pedigreed show prospects for 2018 awaited potential buyers at the December 19, 2017 Great Northern Holiday Sale.  A nice crowd was on hand and the bidding was active throughout the sale.   The 66 Holsteins sold averaged $2,170 with the 18 Jerseys averaging $2,095.  

The high selling cow at $3,250 was a Very Good-85 Supersire consigned by Mystic Valley Dairy LLC and Kevin Jorgensen, Sauk City, WI.  This 7th generation EX or VG sold fresh and milking 143 lbs. after making 30,570 at 1-11.   Dehnel Farms, Inc. added her to their high producing herd at Wausau, WI.   Close behind at $3,200 was a herdmate from the Mystic Valley/Kejo herd.  Donnie Nieman, Beloit, WI placed the final bid to take home Jenny-Lou-KJ Drsr Addie-ET *RC.  This GP-83 @ 2y Dresser is an own daughter of KHW Regiment Apple-Red’s EX-92 Goldwyn daughter with 42,640 4.5 1934.  Addie certainly looks to make it 9 generations Excellent!   Selling for $3,000 was the 12th generation EX or VG, Jeffrey-Way Samay-ET VG-86.   This polled Mayfield daughter made 25,280 4.0 1053 at 2-00, was milking 109 lbs. in her second lactation and sold bred to Wilson.   Consigned by Jeff & Kate Hendrickson, Belleville, WI, Samay was the choice of Adam Faust, Chilton, WI.

A favorite in the bred heifer group was the big McCutchen consigned by the Sarbacker Family of Floydholm Holsteins, Edgerton, WI.   A junior 2 yr old for 2018 due in March with a Gold Chip heifer calf, this powerful, wide rumped heifer is a potential 10th generation Excellent Elegance.  Shawn & Seth Nehls paid $3,100 to add her to their Nehls-Valley herd at Hustisford, WI.  Another standout in the bred heifers was the the red Defiant from Doug Lemke, Chilton, WI.   Springing with a Diamondback heifer calf, this potential 10th generation EX or VG from the Fond Matt Matilda family sold for $2,800 to Eloise & Aubrec Alf, Lomira, WI. 

The 18 young Jersey cows were consigned by Jason Luttropp of Lost-Elm Jerseys.  The high seller in this outstanding group was a potential 10th generation Excellent by Tequila, Lost-Elm Tequila Martina VG-88.  Bred to Hired Gun, she sold for $2,950 to Kim Nikolai, Berlin, WI.  

The high selling open heifer was a March 2017 red & white Incredibull daughter from the EX-94, Reserve All-American, Wilstar-RS Tlt Limited-Red.  Andy & Sarah Lenkaitis, St. Charles, IL paid $2,200 for this stylish heifer consigned by Oakfield Corners Dairy, Oakfield, NY.

The Holiday Sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.  Darrell Worden sold the sale, Kevin Jorgensen provided pedigree commentary and Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Bob Sabo, Lynn Harbaugh and Chad Ryan worked the crowd.  The cattle were prepared by Cody Schultz, Travis Krohlow, Lindsey Lepke, Shawon Vande Zande, Jared Buske and Dawson Nickels.

Redstien Milking Herd Dispersal ~ December, 5, 2017

The Redstien herd from Reedsburg, Wisconsin was dispersed at the Great Northern Sales Arena on December 5, 2017.  As the prefix indicates, most of the cows were red and white, or red-factor.  Brian & Susan Stienmetz decided to disperse the milking herd which currently stood at 18,747 4.1% 768 3.2% 596 in the rolling herd average department. 

The high selling cow at $2,650 was a Red Twizzler daughter milking 110 lbs. in her third lactation after making 24, 218 and 22,694 previously.  Classified Good Plus-83, she certainly needed to see the classifier again!   Lot 1 was a lovely uddered Ladd P 2-year-old milking 60 lbs. and bred to Arbor-Red.   She sold for $,1900.   A polled, red & white Lou P 3 yr old just fresh sold for $1,700.

Folcik Milking Herd & Bred Heifer Dispersal ~ November, 29, 2017

The Folcik Milking Herd & Bred Heifer Dispersal was held at the Great Northern Sales Arena on November 29, 2017.  This Upper Michigan herd was known for using top genetics and solid management practices to produce large volumes of high quality milk.   The current rolling herd average stood at 27,173 3.5% 951 3.1% 848 with a cell count of 68. Marilee Folcik and her belated husband, Gerald, were very detail oriented and had bred a fine homebred herd.   

The top price of the day came on a Sabathia 2 yr old mlking 111 lbs. on her first test.  Backed by a VG-85 34,800 Braxton, this young cow sold for $2,800.  A trio of cows sold for $2,500:   Lot 1, the VG-88 EX-MS Gold Chip with 33,760 at 2-04 sold in calf to Doppler *RC and milking 107 lbs. in her 2nd lactation; another VG Gold Chip with 27,589M out in 296 days and bred to Kingboy; and a Guthrie 2 yr old milking 80 lbs. and serviced to sexed Diamondback. A majority of the cows sold in the $1700 - $2800 range.

 The high selling bred heifer was a Mayfield daughter of the Lot 1, VG-88 EX-MS 33,760 Gold Chip.  Due in February to sexed Kenosha, she sold for $1,950.  A Blitz due in January to Civil and a Gold Chip springing to Armani each sold for 1,825.

855th Great Northern Sale ~ November, 21, 2017

The November Dairy Production sale was held November 21, 2017 at Great Northern.  Prices were consistent and steady throughout the sale.  The day’s top price of $3,100 came on two different cows:  a tall, silky, black Lauthority fresh in her third lactation with 151 lbs. first test after making 26,932 4.1 1107 3.3 879 at 2-10 and a 29,020 3.8 1103 2.9 843 @ 2-00 Skymont fresh with 130 lbs.  Both cows were classified Good Plus in their previous lactations but looked to pick up several points the next time they see a classifier!  The second-high price of $2,800 came on a grade Damion daughter milking 112 lbs. in her second lactation.  Two additional cows sold for $2,700 each.  A Yoder 2 yr old milking 101 lbs. and a 32,358 Gabor milking 132 lbs.  The majority of the first and second lactation fresh cows sold in the $1,700 to $2,300 range.   A group of big, well grown Registered springing heifers sold for an average of $1,730.  Most of these heifers were bred to sexed semen. The top heifer at $1,850 was a Mogul from a VG-87 Guthrie with 21,660 4.2 905.  She sold due to sexed Gold Chip.   The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

 

Halloween Harvest Sale ~ October, 31, 2017

The chilly weather wasn’t much of a Halloween treat, but the line-up awaiting prospective buyers at the Halloween Harvest Sale offered lots of treats for profit minded dairymen!  A nice crowd assembled on October 31, 2017 at the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac, for this fall sale sponsored by the Wisconsin Holstein Association and appropriately named the Halloween Harvest Sale.  There was active bidding with consistent prices throughout the sale which resulted in a $2,740 average of 70 lots.

Topping the sale was one of the lovely uddered Red & Whites offered in the sale.  Jeffrey-Way Sophi-Red-ET *PO VG-86 sold fresh 2 weeks and milking over 90 lbs. in her second lactation after making 22,378 4.7 1041 3.9 863 at 2-02.  A twelfth generation EX or VG, this Armani is backed by an EX-94 2E Lawn Boy with 50,240 4.2 2017.  Selz-Pralle Dairy, Humbird, WI placed the final bid of $6,500 on this consignment from Jeff & Kate Hendrickson, Belleville, WI. 

Selling for $6,000 was Lot 1, Our-Favorite Expectation-ET GP-83, the consignment of Todd Stanek, Fall Creek, WI.  This Kingboy junior 2-year-old is a sister to the popular A.I. bulls Undenied, Union, Point On & Mafia, who rank very high on the PTA Type list!  Their dam is the highly regarded, Our-Favorite Unlimited EX-92 by Atwood.  Eli King, Millersburg, PA invested in this promising young cow.

An Atwood daughter of the 2013 Star of the Breed, Idee Shottle Lalia EX-95 2E, sold to Tim Borgardt, Oshkosh, WI for $4,800.   Consigned by Milk Source LLC, Kaukauna, WI this VG-88 EX-MS 3-year-old sold milking 118 lbs. and bred back, carrying a Doorman heifer calf.  

A young cow that caught the attention of many was Tombeth Goldchip Esagold-ET.  Classified VG-85 in September, this July, 2015 Gold Chip daughter sold serviced to sexed Undenied.  The consignment of Thomas & Elizabeth Kearns, Gays Mills, WI, Esagold hails from one of their key cow families with two dams at 94 points!  Jake Kruschke, New Richmond, WI paid $4,000 to add this young cow to the high type Crisdhome herd.   

The top bred heifer at $3,550 was consigned by Mr. Kruschke. Crisdhome Reesespuff-Red-Tw is a September, 2015 Absolute due in November to Atwood.  Her EX-94 3E Advent dam with 36,560 goes back to 4 time All-American, Renita Ranger-Red EX-94 3E.  Second-Look Holsteins, Eden, WI purchased this fancy heifer. 

Craig Carncross, Lodi, WI paid $3,900 for the top open heifer.  Sunview Fortune Hope-ET is a July, 2016 Fortune daughter with a GTPI +2719 and +9.3PL +3.8DPR.  Her dam is a +2569G Supershot then the VG-86 Epic Hue with several sons in A.I.   Hope was the consignment of Sebastien Dion & Neil McDonah, Trempealeau, WI.

853rd Great Northern Sale ~ October, 17, 2017

A nice crowd was on hand October 17, 2017 at the Great Northern Sales Arena for the October Dairy Production Sale. The prospective buyers bid quickly and actively with several cows selling over the $2,000 mark.  The high selling cow for the evening was a big, tall, long Lynn Dickey 3 year old milking 121 lbs. SCC 9 after making 29,830 4.2 1281 @ 1-10.   A GP-84 Observer daughter with 26,020 @ 1-10 sold for $2,700.  She was fresh in September and had 118 lbs. SCC 39 on her October test.  A GP-83 33,910 Salvatore  also commanded a final bid of $2,700.  This 3 year old had 129 lbs. SCC 13 on her last test and her VG-86 dams has records to 31,800M.  Two other cows sold for $2,600 each:  a Watson 3 year old milking 121 lbs. SCC 7 and a Tatum 2 year old with 94 lbs. SCC 16 on her October test.   The top selling springing heifer was a Riverdown Launch from a GP-82 34,170 dam.  Due to Mr Brash, she sold for $1,500.    The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

Fond du Lac County Classic ~ September, 26, 2017

The 72nd edition of the Fond du Lac County Holstein Classic was held on September 26, 2017 at the Great Northern Sales Arena, Fond du Lac, WI.  A nice crowd and active bidding led to a $2,398 average on 62 lots.   Darrell Worden sold the sale with Kevin Jorgensen providing pedigree updates.  Fielding bids were Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Don Mayer, Bob Sabo and Ron Roskopf. 

Claiming high selling honors for the evening was the consignment of Tom Breeser, Amiity-Breeze Holsteins, Brandon, WI.   Mystik-Kreek Atw Holiday-ET *RC VG-85 sold just fresh, milking 105 lbs. and looking the part to soon complete 6 generations Excellent.   This Atwood 3 year old was purchased by Andy & Sarah Lenkaitis, St. Charles, IL for $3,500.  Another beautiful uddered Atwood, this one a 2 yr old just fresh 20 days and milking 89 lbs. sold for $3,400 to Meier Meadows LLC, Ridott, IL.  Four-Of-A-Kind Atw Ariel-ET was the consignment of Doug Lemke, Hilbert, WI and is backed by an EX-94 3E GMD Shottle who completes 4 generations Excellent.  Meier Meadows also selected the VG-87 Mogul consigned by Rodney Zietlow, Berlin, WI.  Bur-Rodz Mogul Annie VG-87 was milking 128 lbs. in her second lactation and sold bred to Kingboy.  Her selling price was $3,350.  A big red & white Ladd P daughter consigned by Budjon Farms & Peter Vail, Lomira, WI sold to Felten Farms, St. Cloud, WI for $3,050.   Wildweed Ladd Margarita-Red VG-87 was nominated All-American R&W Jr. 2 Year Old in 2016 and descends from the World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, HIllcroft Leader Melanie EX-96 3E 2*.

851st Great Northern Sale ~ September, 12, 2017

Several cows sold in the $2000 range with a top price of $2,300 at the September 12, 2017 Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern.  Two cows shared the title of high seller:  an Altarabo 2-year-old milking 115 lbs. SCC 83 from a 36,180 4.1 1484 dam and a London 2-year-old just fresh with 80 lbs.  Another 3 cows sold for $2,200 each.  All fresh 2-year-olds milking 90 – 113 lbs. with snug, well attached udders.  The only springing heifer to sell was a grade heifer due to Headliner and she commanded a final bid of $1,450.  The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. 

Duckett Summer Celebration Sale ~ August, 18, 2017

Duckett Holsteins hosted a Summer Celebration Sale on August 18, 2017 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  They offered a deep pedigreed group of young cows and heifers from their key cow families as well as a beautiful uddered group of first and second lactation cows from their Genetic Futures milking herd.   At day’s end the 66 head sold for an average of $2,907 with buyers coming from Ontario, Alberta, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Maryland, Oklahoma, Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa, and North Carolina.

A junior three-year-old, recently scored EX-90 EX-MS topped the sale at $8,900 going to New Obelink Farms in Ontario.  A daughter of the Epic son, Anton, this impressive young cow hails from the Regancrest S Chassity family.  Her dam is an EX-93 Atwood from the EX-92 Pontiac daughter of Chassity.  This 11th generation Excellent, Ms Duckett Anton Camillie-ET, is certain to develop into a high scoring cow! Another Excellent cow commanding a great deal of attention was Vale-O-Skene Attic Stars EX-91 EX-MS.  This well balanced, deep ribbed Attic daughter sold to Erik Gilbertson and Brandon Flannery, Hollandale, WI for $6,200.  Backed by an EX-92 3E Gibson, Stars was raised to EX-92 for her new owners in September!

A potential Excellent Goldwyn from the Frosty family sold for $5,450 to Andrew DenHaan, Fergus, Ontario.  Duckett-Harvue GD France-Tw VG-87 sold as a second calf Sr. two-year-old and placed 2nd in class at the Autumn Opportunity Show for her new owner!  Her dam is the EX-92 2E GMD Dundee Foxy with 43,850 then the 2-time World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Harvue Roy Frosty EX-97 3E GMD. New Obelink Farms also purchased S-S-I Davinci 7514 10381-ET VG-88 for $5,400. This high testing, beautiful uddered Davinci daughter has more points coming and is backed by the heavily contracted Roylane Shot Mindy 2079-ET VG-86 DOM family.

849th Great Northern Sale ~ July, 25, 2017

The Great Northern July Dairy Production Sale was held on July 25, 2017.  As dairymen struggle with the current milk prices, so do the prices for replacement cattle.  A nice uddered group of fresh cows milking well with low SCC sold in this sale with the top cow selling for $2,600.  The high seller was an Atlantic daughter fresh in her second lactation milking 113 lbs. SCC 13 after making 24,554 at 1-10.  Classified GP-82 at 2y, she looked the part to move into the Very Good category.  The next high seller at $2,400 was a 32,799 Hero daughter fresh with her third calf and milking 103 lbs. SCC 30. The only springing heifer to sell was a Pitbull daughter due to Clark that brought $1,425.  The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

Great Northern-848 ~ June, 13, 2017

The June Dairy Production Sale at Great Northern was held on June 13, 2017.  A high-quality group of fresh cows was offered to the nice crowd on hand.  The top price of the evening was $2,600.   This came on two different lots.  The first cow to achieve the $2,600 price was a GP-82 Watson milking 146 lbs. in her second lactation after making 25,713 at 1-11.   Also selling for $2,600 was another Watson daughter, this one a 2 yr-old milking 99 lbs.  Selling for $2,550 was a GP-80 Jetset daughter milking 117 lbs. in her second lactation after making 21,349 4.3 922 at 1-11.  A Jett Air 2 yr-old also sold for $2,550.  She had 108 lbs. on her June test and is backed by a 26,860 dam. Several cows sold in the $2400 to $2600 range, but buyers are very particular and market activity is not as strong as it was earlier in the year. Shawnee Holsteins Complete Dispersal ~ June, 1, 2017

Dan and Deb Dantoin dispersed their Shawnee Holstein herd on June 1, 2017 at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  The homebred herd consisted of 178 cows and heifers.  The rolling herd average was currently at 22,833 3.5% 810 3.1% 699.  Over the years this farmer-breeder herd had sent bulls to A.I. and sold cattle to other dairymen that had performed above and beyond expectations.  The beautiful summer day found many trying to make first crop hay, but those in attendance made good buys and are certain to be glad they could add some Shawnee genetics to their herds.

The high selling cow of the day was a GP-83 VG-MS McCutchen two-year-old making over 21,000 and due back to the type specialist, Mitchell.  This beautiful uddered young cow hailed from the Swampy-Hollow Elevation Sweet family that was very influential in the Shawnee herd.

Ed Niesen paid $2,800 to add her to his growing Reedsburg, WI herd.  Another McCutchen two-year-old claimed the second-high price of $2,750.  This promising young cow made 23,900 at 2-07 and is due back in August.   She sold backed by five generations Excellent and Very Good.  The high selling bred heifer was a Shakespeare due shortly to Kingboy.  Her VG-87 22,640 4.5 1010 Shottle dam completes 11 generations Excellent or Very Good in the Plain View Inga EX-95 cow family.   She was purchased by John Ketter, Malone, WI for $2,350.   A Red Diamondback fall calf from a GP-82 two year old caught the eye of Gary Breitlow who placed the final bid of $2,400 to add her to his Breit-View herd at Algoma, WI.

Moorclose Holsteins Complete Dispersal ~ May, 22, 2017

The Moorclose Holsteins Complete Dispersal was held May 22, 2017 at the farm in Cuba City, Wisconsin.   Bill and Kelle Calvert and their family offered their impressive homebred herd which boasted a 25,901 3.4% 885 3.2% 818 rolling herd average and classification BAA of 109.2%.  The Moorclose herd was a 6-year Progressive Breeder Registry recipient from the Holstein Association and had claimed Premier Breeder honors at the District 3 Show in 2014 and Premier Exhibitor at District 3 in 2013 and 2014.

There was a good deal of interest in the herd and a nice crowd was on hand for both the open house held on Sunday, May 21st and then again sale day.  Cattle sold to 5 states and 2 Canadian provinces with a total of 155 whole lots selling for an average of $2,624. 

Commanding the top price of the day was the Very Good Kingboy daughter of KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET EX-96 3E 16* DOM.  Ms Apple KB Ateka-ET *RC was making a nice 2 yr old record with 4.6% fat and 3.5% protein and sold pregnant to Maverick Crush.   The final bid of $12,000 came from Duane Zimmer, Daysland, Alberta who utilized Cowbuyer.com to do this bidding.   Lot 1, Moorclose Atwood Wren VG-88, ranked second on the high selling list at $9,500.   This Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin Junior 2-Yr-Old in 2016 sold just fresh and looked to be a contender in the showring again in 2017.   A sixth generation Excellent or Very Good, Wren was purchased by Kyle VanderFeltz, Lawton, PA.  Dubbed as a cow with a tremendous future was Moorclose Amazing Cheeto VG-87.  This Altaamazing daughter sold bred back to Wilson and backed by a VG-88 39,230 Damion who goes back to one of Kelle’s show winners from her days as a junior member.    Cheeto was purchased by Drew, Ainsley & Macie Noble and Madison, McKenzie & Payton Calvert, Lancaster, WI for $9,500.   Another young cow that was developing nicely was the selection of Brandon Smith, Pulaski, WI.   He chose Moorclose Fever Windsor, a Sr. 2-Year-Old by Fever who is backed by a VG-88 38,010 Lightning then four Excellent dams in the Winnie family that was so influential at Moorclose. 

Family was the key at Moorclose.  A close knit, hardworking family that worked together with great cow families to breed and develop an exceptional herd.   Now Bill and Kelle will be able to devote more time to their family.

844th Great Northern Sale ~ ~ April, 11, 2017

A nice, upbeat crowd was on hand April 11th at the Great Northern Sales Arena for the April Dairy Production Sale. The offering was a bit smaller in quantity but big on quality. The high selling cow for the day was a VG 32,620 4.0 1302 Windbrook milking 115 lbs. in her second lactation and bred back to Wilson.  She commanded a final bid of $2,800.  Selling for $2,750 was a big Time 3-year-old milking 104 lbs. after making 27,020 a 2-04. Close behind at $2,700 was a 34,800 @ 1-10 Braxton fresh with second calf and milking 163 lbs. on her last test. Many of the cows sold in the $2,000 - $2,500 range.   The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.  

Quest for Success III ~ ~ March, 31, 2017

 A large crowd gathered on March 31, 2017 at Bella-View Holsteins, Marion, Wisconsin for the third edition of the Quest for Success sale.  The performance of previous purchases from this sale series has been impressive to say the least.  Past buyers along with many others hoping to make that purchase that would be successful for them made for an active sale with bids coming from within the standing room only tent as well as the many prospective buyers accumulated outside. At day’s end the 100 lots sold averaged an impressive $8,119 with cattle going to 15 different states as well as Canada. 

Topping the sale was the much talked about 2 yr old by Mountfield SSI Dcy Mogul-ET.  Recently scored VG-88 and tabbed as one of the finest 2 year olds to sell this spring, Kiko Mogul Mara 1095, certainly looked the part!  She sold for $47,000 to Norman Nabholz and Garrett Schmidt, West Union, Iowa. Claiming the title as second high seller was the consignment of Larson Acres Inc., Evansville, WI.  Lars-Acres Jedi Ferrari is +2839GTPI and +908DWP$ in addition to being +8.1PL +933NM.  This promising Jedi from a GP-83 VG-MS @ 2y Racer sold to Peak Genetics, Watertown, WI for $31,000. 

The All-American Fall Heifer Calf from 2016 was one of the standouts in the row of yearlings and looks to be ready to defend her title in 2017.  Glamourview, Walkersville, MD paid $30,500 for Frohland Galaxy Contrast consigned by Bowen, Doeberiener & Schilling, Decatur, MI. Another heifer that looked to be in the “hunt” all year was Duckett Solomon Faye, the Solomon summer yearling from the Frosty family consigned by Duckett Holsteins, Rudolph, WI.

When the gavel fell, Izzy Bohrer, Walkersville, MD won out with a final bid of $25,000. 

            A highlight in the genomic line-up was the consignment of Rickert Bros. LLC, Eldorado, WI.  The Rickerts offered choice of 2 heifers, a +2773G Exactly who is the #1 Exactly heifer in the breed or her Modesty sister who is +2822G +2254M +80F +64P +924NM.  Their dam is a VG-87 Montross 2 yr old +2636G who is heavily contracted.   Jauquet Holsteins, Luxemburg, WI paid $25,000 for the right to choose between these money-making prospects. The consignment of Siemers Holstein Farms, Inc., Cleveland, WI sported an impressive GLPI of +3376 and +2855 Pro$ in Canada.  Siemers Jedi Jipseeny-ET GTPI +2784 is a flush age Jedi backed by 13 generations EX or VG and was purchased by Select Sires, Plain City, OH for $24,000. 

The sale offered an incredible line up of red and whites and several red factor offspring as well.  Leading the list of high sellers in this group was the awesome summer yearling consigned by Hilrose Dairy LLC, Sherwood, Wisconsin. This Diamondback from the 2016 Reserve All-American Aged Cow, Hilrose Advent Anna-Red-ET EX-94 2E, was the choice of Jim & Marvin Schluter, Gifford, Illinois at $14,500.  A favorite among the older yearlings was Bella-On-Q Lotsofluv-Red-ET who was a Junior All-American nominee in 2016.   This Lotus winter yearling was the selection of Ferme Intense, Bridgitte des saults, Quebec at $13,500.   Consigned by the

Zimmermans & Harbaughs, Ringle, Wisconsin, Lotsofluv’s dam just scored Very Good as a 2 yr old and is a sister to the 2011 International R&W Show Reserve Grand Champion, Wilstar-RS Tlt Limited-Red-ET EX-94 2E.

            Izzy Bohrer, Walkersville, Maryland paid $11,700 to own the big, deep ribbed Diamondback winter calf from Unanimous All-American Summer Yearling in 2015, Jerland SH Dir Nixie-Red-ET.   Ms RV QM GV Dbk Nan-Red-ET was the consignment of Lindsay Bowen, Amy Ryan and Glamourview, West Salem, Ohio.   The 2016 Unanimous All-American Milking Yearling, Sunnyside Candy Heztry-Red VG-87, sold for $10,900 to T&L Cattle Co. and Stranshome, Owatonna, Minnesota.   Consigned by Sunnyside Dairy Farms LLC, Valders, Wisconsin, Candy is due back in June to Diamondback.

            Quest for Success III was hosted by Lynn & Sara Harbaugh of Bella-View Holsteins and Chad, Amy, Mark and Mary Ryan of Ryan-Vu Holsteins. Cattle sold to 15 states as well as British Columbia and Quebec.   Chris Hill sold the sale with Norman Nabholz providing the pedigree commentary.  Fielding bids from the large crowd were Rick Bovre, Scott Culbertson, Tom DeGroot, Kyle Demmer, Kevin Jorgensen, Nick Raggi, Ron Roskopf, Paul Trapp & Bob Sabo.  Tom Cull, Michael Heath, Ryan Matheron and Reid Stransky were busy on the phones.  Aaron Ray Tompkins handled several bids via Cowbuyer.com as well. Presenting the cattle in the ring were Mandi Bue, Chelsea Holschbach, Christy Oehmichen, Brandon Ferry and Andy Steinhagen.  The cattle were expertly prepared by Jason Danhof, Mikayla & Tyler Endres, Pat Heeren, Travis Krohlow, Dawson Nickels and Garrett Schmidt. Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

842nd Great Northern ~ March, 21, 2017

The smaller milk checks received recently seemed to have a big effect on prices at the March Dairy Production Sale on March 21st at the Great Northern Sales Arena.  The high selling cow of the day at $2,950 was an impressive Richman daughter milking 121 lbs. in her second lactation.  Already scored VG-85, she made over 28,000 at 2-02 and is backed by 3 EX & V dams over 31,000M.   Selling for $2,700 was a VG-86 Guthrie daughter just fresh with her second calf and milking over 100 lbs.  This 8th generation EX or VG made 25,682 at 2-01. A big, wide rumped Gold Chip 3 yr old sold for $2,600.  She made 26,826 at 2-01 and was fresh and milking over 100 lbs.  There were many good buys in the $1500 - $2000 range.   The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.

APPLE MANIA II ~ March, 4, 2017

The dairy industry certainly has benefited by the genetics of KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET EX-96 3E 16* DOM.  While much can be written about the accomplishments of the one of a kind Apple, it is her tremendous transmitting ability on both sides of the pedigree that make her genetics so sought after.   The Apple Mania II sale on March 4, 2017 featured an awesome lineup of Apple offspring. Hosted by the Apple Partners, the sale offered many Apple offspring as well as several daughters of her many high type sons.   The 102 lots averaged $3,904 with buyers coming from 13 states, Ontario, British Columbia and Germany. 

It was hard to miss the 2016 Unanimous All-American R&W Fall Yearling, Budjon-Vail HZ Lacey-Red-ET.  This massive framed heifer with a beautiful udder promise is due later in the month to Armani and is backed by an EX-92 Reserve All-American by Absolute. Cooper Galton, Nunda, NY placed the final bid of $24,000 with hopes of continuing the winning streak of this impressive heifer!   Lacey was consigned by Chris & Jen Hill, Matt Hawbaker and Nathan Youse, Thurmont, MD. 

A lovely uddered young cow with lots of earning potential was selected by John Schneller & Kevin Ihm, Dodgeville, WI.   Redrock-View Kingboy 363-ET is +2518 GTPI and her full sister is the dam of the #3 GTPI heifer in the breed!  Consigned by Redrock-View Farm, Darlington, WI, 363 is backed b y a VG Uno sister to Apple, then the brood cow extraordinaire, Kamps-Hollow Altitude-ET *RC EX-95 2E DOM.  This exciting young Kingboy sold for $15,200.  

Third on the high sellers list was an own daughter of Apple, Apple-Pts Amita-ET *RC.  This stylish September ’16 Crush consigned by the Apple Partners sold for $13,900.  Amita will join her EX-92 Destry sister at Golden Oaks Farm, Wauconda, IL.  

The Apple Mania II sales team included Chris Hill and Norman Nabholz in the sale box with Scott Culbertson, Bobby Griggs, Lynn Harbaugh, Michael Heath, Kevin Jorgensen, Perry Phend, Nick Raggi, Ron Roskopf, Chad Ryan, Kevin Ziemba and Rick Bovre handling the bids.   Brandon Ferry, Jeff Brown and Dawson Nickels presented the cattle in the ring.  The fitting crew of Jared Buske, Tyler Endres, Travis Krohlow, Luke Lensmire, Lindsey Lepke, Aaron Lien, Cody Schultz and Shawon Vande Zande had the cattle show-ring ready.   Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. managed the sale.

840th Great Northern Sale ~ February 14, 2017 ~ February, 14, 2017

A nice crowd of enthusiastic bidders gathered at the Great Northern Sales Arena on February 14, 2017 for the February Dairy Production Sale.  The prices were steady throughout the sale with the milking cows averaging $2500.  The top Holstein was an Austin 2 yr old milking 85 lbs. and serviced to Slugger. This lovely uddered young cow backed by a 36,761M dam sold for $2,900.  Two cows sold for $2,850 each:  a grade Ingenious daughter fresh with over 100 lbs. SCC 37 after making 25,000 at 1-11 and a Predestine 3 yr old milking 97 lbs. SCC 30 who is backed by 4 EX & VG dams over 30,000M.  The high selling springing heifer was an Acme due to Secure.  Backed by a 24,170 dam, she sold for $2,300. 

Lost-Elm Jerseys sold a group of 14 young Jersey cows in the sale.  This group of 2 yr olds averaged $2511 with a top price of $2,900.  This came on a super uddered Region backed by 9 EX and VG dams.  An On Time daughter due in April to Hired Gun sold for $2,650 and another On Time who’s dam was just raised to EX-93 sold for $2,650.

839th Great Northern Sale ~ January 24, 2017 ~ January, 24, 2017

A nice crowd was on hand January 24th at the Great Northern Sales Arena for the first production sale of 2017.  The cattle were well received with 5 cows selling for more than $3,000.  The top price of $3,450 came on an impressive Altaexacter daughter.  Classified GP-84 with a VG-MS in her first lactation, she certainly was a candidate for more points!  At 2-00 she made 30,450 3.9 1180 3.1 952 and was fresh with 133 lbs. first test.  Her EX dam has 3 records over 40,000M.   Close behind at $3,400 was a VG Atwood who made 27,629 4.0 1122 3.1 873 at 2-02.  Fresh in December, she had 120 lbs. on her first test and is backed by a VG-86 33,130 Alexander. A beautiful uddered Jett Air daughter with 28,144 4.1 1155 2.9 806 at 2-10 sold for $3,350.  She was milking 136 lbs. with a 52 SCC.  A GP-82 VG-MS 29,870 4.4 1326 3.3 981 Dorcy sold for $3,300.  Milking 103 lbs., she’s backed by a VG-88 37,870 dam.   A 2 yr old Massey daughter with a welded-on udder sold for $3,100.  She was milking 103 lbs. with a 20 SCC. A great many of the cows sold in the $2200 - $2500 range with several active bidders. The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc.
